Old coyotes like this girl did not get that age on her face by being careless.

I’ve found that when a female gets this old, a blind trail set is usually the only viable option.

A good tabletop flat set snagged this one along with two more adults for a gang set triple play.

This is the second coyote in three days at this particular set.

The first catch was a nice looking male in his prime.

I guess she had a thing for the young dogs. cool

Adult males like this one can really put the hurt on the fawn crop.

He now resides in “Coyote Restland”.

Ok, I have to ask. If these highly pressured coyotes are on edge and shy away from all human scent/unnatural smells/intrusion, how are they getting caught in remakes?

Good work James

Did you ever elaborate on the no backing flat set you had mentioned?

Don't know if I missed it or you have not shared yet

Heck, if that was the case you should be able to walk your fence perimeter and keep the coyotes off the property. I’m guessing you don’t trap all year and let the population build?

Boy ain’t that the truth. When I’m trapping high fence ranches in July and August and it’s 100+ in the pines I sweat like you would not believe. I really try not to let it hit the ground or get it on my traps but it does and surprisingly I’ll get first night catches but not all coyotes are the same just like people.

S94, I have some coyotes that avoid an entire pasture because of constant pressure.

A catch circle or two is little more than a speed bump when compared to avoidance by compartment.

The answer to your question it’s pretty simple.

I show Wile E. what he expects to see and smell at that location under those circumstances.

That's how I get consistent remake catches on coyotes of any grade level,

Tejas, can you help me out with what a coyote expects to see at a remake?

I’ve found that set visuals seem to work better when they fit the situation and location.

The situation could be a road line, bait station, fresh deer kill, coyote rut, cow causality, etc.

Coyotes show me what is normal for each scenario. I use that as a guideline to what set look I show them.

For me, that applies to any set whether it is a remake or new.

Whatever visual I go with it is always subtle yet very noticeable on a wide open set area.

Nate, how do you fare with remakes in your neck of the woods, and what has worked best for you?

Guy makes catches that would blow most people's minds and this is his his first coyote post I've seen.

Thank you Tejas.

Could you give specific examples of what you do in some of those scenarios?

You bet Nate!

It’s a given all of those scenarios have a whole lot of marking going on.

When that is the case I join in on the party.

That black calling card is quick to catch the eye and nose of Wile E. in cactus country.

It is something he expects to see, and has a hard time passing up.

It’s no surprise a flat set with poop and urine is the primary set I catch the most coyotes on.

That goes for new sets or remakes. Variations of the look & attractant goes without saying.

It is not fancy, but it has continued to be extremely effective here.

What do those Kansas coyotes go for up in your neck of the woods Nate?

I would sure like to hear some insight and observations on those cold weather canines.

I to was wondering what you considered normal and subtle on a remake. Come to find out, you do the exact same thing I do! There is almost always droppings scattered around the catch circle, I will gather them up and place them as the attractant, sometimes add a shot of urine, or occasionally a dab of gland lure, but usually just the droppings, the scent of the catch circle gets them to the area and the droppings zeros them in to step on the pan.

Another question for you guys on remakes. If the trap is on a drag, do you remake in the original location, or where they tangled up? I've done both, but remake in the original location more often than not.

So, is the dropping essentially becoming the attractant for the set? The trap is placed in front of the dropping? I use them on remakes but keep the original set (dirt hole, flat, whatever) and place the dropping to the side of the trap for foot placement.

Yes, I will usually reset the trap in the same place and place the droppings as the attractant, if I was using a rock say as the backing/lure holder on a flat set, and it is still there, I will place the droppings on top of it. Or I may simply use the droppings as the attractant with no backing if there either wasn't backing in the first place, or it was destroyed by the original catch. If there is a bunch of debris in the catch circle I may kind of shove it to the side in a pile with the droppings either on top or at the base of it. I've never used droppings as blocking for foot placement, although many good trappers do with success. I always use it to direct their nose.
