I burn a bunch of soft maple , for free it burns fine some friends had one fall on their drive way all I had to do was load it.
well it would have been nice if they were a bit more consistent on 16 inch pieces but again free so I had to cut a few down
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Everyone around here seems to be running short of firewood this year. Snows too deep to be able to get out and cut more. A load like that would bring a good price right about now!
Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

Brother in law called said guy cutting a tree did I want any. Did a drive by look , it's soft maple but all ready chunked up so I took it. Free is an excellent price!
With the US so divided, I'm just glad to be on the side that believes in God, has the most guns, and knows which restroom to use.

I've found it to be excellent firewood, for free.

We have millions of dead ash trees and for many with little snow and deep frost they have been able to get into some of the lower swamps better this winter. Some that are not totally dead and big are being logged for lumber. Most will make millions of cords of firewood if the wood can be gotten out of the swamps and lower areas. Several land owners are looking for suitable replacements and there are not many quality species that can grow where many ash grow, especially black ash.
Bryce South of here, the swampy areas are filling in with red maples, which are competing with a multitude of young ash trees, that came from the seeds their parent trees put all of their energy into when they were dying. Red maples may be a viable alternative. They will grow well in areas where water stands much of the year. Keith

There is some good and bad with anything.
Soft maple generates a few less BTU's than some, but splits easier and dries faster. I consider it excellent firewood.

Free is an excellent price no matter what wood it was.. I spent one whole winter burning white pine...is there better?, you bet, but it's wood, it was free, I have a wood stove, so in it it went..lol I burned soft maple and red pine for one whole winter and they both worked great. I stay 3 years ahead and they were next in line.

I burn a bunch of soft maple too. There is a lot of it on my camp property. I keep a good supply on hand and it heats camp just fine. The price is right too. Hardly anyone can consistently cut to 16" which is what I burn in both my woodstoves. I really don't like having to cut cookies off the ends of 18'-21" blocks but for free I'll do it...sometimes...
Eh...wot?
