I forget what that Appy's name was, but he was highly trained and very nice proportioned. I remember how he made that running backup so smoothly. Is that the same Cochise he rode in El Dorado? I remember him telling Cochise to stop in the scene where he is measuring up Mississippi's (James Caan) shooting ability. El Dorado and Rio Lobo are probably my two favorite Wayne westerns. And after seeing The Green Berets at 11 or 12 that's what I wanted to do when I graduated... But, life had other plans for me. Mike El Dorado and Rio Lobo were the same movie with different actors and names. Watch them back to back and see.

Lovely shots , Bruce.
Thanks for that info, too. I didn't know Cochise was born in 1957 !
I can see the Quarter half in him.
Yes he is amazing, but in that movie, watch that other appy that the girl rides. I have to say, if I had them both lined up to choose, I would choose that roaned lace appy because of how he moves. Not flashy colours, but man can he stop and turn , with a rocking chair gallop. This one Sharon? Been sitting here eating supper watching El Dorado

This is my favorite. It does not represent every nuance of John Wayne, but it does show him at his most “True Grit”. Seeing that movie at the theater made me a better man. Edit: Blak Spot - your photo is much better! I would really like to have that autographed JW photo!

Mike , the other horse that the girl rode in that show , was also an appy, not as striking a coat colour as Cochise, but in many ways I really liked that horse better. His athletic ability was nothing short of remarkable. He was the classic broom tail short axle appy that the original breed was like . The most fun rides I've had has been on horses built like that, slide stop and turn, spin on a dime. I thought it interesting that the girl always rode him with a type of riding pad with stirrups and a handle on the front. Very different design. You can just look at a horse and tell they're built for speed.
ND FTA, Good likeness of him, isn't it ?
As much as I enjoy the old time genuine actors , I know JW wouldn't care one bit for what's happening nowadays , and not just in the entertainment industry.
I 100% agree the way that horse moved was wonderful to see, when I was a kid my cousin had one almost a carbon copy which i was lucky enough to get to ride now and then, I swear that horse could walk a tightrope if you ask her to, or climb a cliff if you wanted, also one of the smoothest rides I’ve even had and the most secure feeling sitting in her saddle Personally I have always been partial to those of him and his family, in my opinion they are the ones that show the true nature of the man [img] https://trapperman.com/forum/attach...d8b5caf_f68f_4ae0_a141_cf5d7ac4d799.jpeg[/img Ever time you see him with his kids they all look so happy

Bruce, that's the horse ! What I call a bay roan lace appy pattern. And that saddle pad is very unique.
He isn't near as pretty in colours as Cochise, but the way he turns , stops , rollbacks, and runs is very nice to me.
But that's the horse- thank you ! Your very welcome.
