After the two year forced break, just got back from my first group of the season. They allowed a couple of pics.
[Linked Image]
That’s a 54” pike
[Linked Image]
42” lake trout.
We boated too many fish to count ranging in size up to these two. There were no walleyes to speak of. Nice to see Canada open for business.

The heck with the walleyes when you can catch pike like that!

Osky. I'm going to have to hire you to do a lake trout trip. Are they still shallow?

Steven we were actually sight fishing the pike most of the time, 6-7’ deep and less. The lake trout were at various depths down to 80’ or so, I boated the biggest trout running back and forth from 85’ to 36’. The big ones were hitting on the shallow end of the zig but they could have followed the lures from the depths.
The pike were in water 56-61*. The trout were in 53* water for the most part.
Never have seen a lake so full of trout 4-6 lbs. they were like perch, from 2’ of water to the deepest holes.

Osky, my interest in lake trout is casting when they are shallow. To quote the late Macho Man Savage "oh yea"

Best time for that is the first full moon of October. They are on the reefs then.
Your other best shot is up at great bear lake. Doesn’t matter when. Casting may not be an option. They open around July 2nd as a rule. I’ll be up there later in July.
Word has it they pulled up a laker that went 101 1/2 lbs.

Thanks guys. Nice to see catch and release being implemented far and wide making these catches happen. Boco you Canadians are doing a great job of preservation for the future.

Looking at my current view as of today Bear isn’t open. A bit on the edges but 90% iced up yet. NASA worldview. I hope the best for them.
