Everything organic molds eventually. Floating and waterproof is subjective as water always wins over time. I guess the better question is what baits survive the elements the longest while remaining effective. I came across this when I was thinking of some sort of dp cap like a golf or ping pong ball. I might give these a try as both a cap and visual in cages.

Just completed the 10 day coon removal job today. Caught 26. Results on bait preference were kinda jilted. The fish food/corn mix with various add-in odors caught more but I used that from the 1st night. I used that mix with vanilla extract, almond oil, smoke oil, tropical punch Kool-aid powder, and ground persimmon powder added in various DPs. Marshmallows with Kool-aid powder seemed to be the worst for hot, humid weather coon trapping. Turns gooey fast and attracts ants quickly.

Swamp, we’re most of your catches around the corn field? Or trails leading to and from it? Or was that just one spot out of many? And since I’ve never trapped a planted field for coons, were the trails obvious or just random tracks along the edges?

Seems like the general consensus is molasses, how big of a bottle of molasses?
The corn idea seems good but can get expensive with prices no adays for large batches with how many dps I’ll set and how often they get robbed by mice. I’ve got some golf balls for this season to put on top. Does anyone drill a hole in the golf ball to lure them? Also though about drilling a small hole in the bottom and stringing some wire through and attach to the stake so the golf ball doesn’t roll away. Anyone use this method? 50 lb bag of corn at tractor supply $14.99

I’ve thought about the sweet corn oil or persimmons oil but I’m not sure if it tastes like it or just smells like it. I know coons are attracted to fish oil but don’t like the taste of it, I’m just wondering if they actually taste like they smell. One way to find out. A drop of either one probably won't kill you and then you'll know.

Corn in bottom to keep them digging. burnt popcorn on top to attract. You ever smelt burnt popcorn you can smell it a long ways away. Gonna try the burnt popcorn

No obvious trails there just tracks in the disked dirt and the torn down corn. Most of the others were caught near a double grape arbor (big domestic grapes) that is about 75 yds long and a deer feeder dispensing corn. I did catch 3 on logging roads (at intersections) and 1 down along creek.

I like to give them 3 attractions. Bait in the trap. Paste on the lip with a cap. Lure in the cap cup.
I use pull only traps so fill about 1/3. I preload the bait and add the caps at home.
They find the payoff and get caught.

1. Bag of cheap cat food and bottle of molasses, both from dollar general. I don’t spend more than about $5 on the ingredients. Makes about a gallon and a half of bait. Mix it up in summer in a big container with a lid. and shake or stir it up every couple days until all of the molasses is soaked up. Will make a LOT of sets and it’s very cheap and effective for me. It won’t gum up your trap either…dry bait is easiest to work with.
2. Any off brand, inexpensive, fruit flavored cereal like fruit loops, fruity pebbles, etc. get the off brand and buy the bulk bag version. Under five bucks, makes a ton of sets with DPs, and works very well for coon.
Set right in trail or on fresh sign only. Jim Are you using a 5 pound bag of cat food to one bottle of molasses?

Wonder if Carmel corn would be any good. That's a horrible idea. It wouldn't make the trip from my house to my first set. I have to buy 2 big bags of marshmallows. I can't eat two big bags. (I will be into the second bag before the day is out.) Professional bear guides, trying to spruce up their doughnut offerings, will try things which makes our mouths water, like jello packets and such. Probably be a good idea to think that way for raccoons too.

We've just been using cheap cat food and/or floating fish food. Squirt some fish oil on a tree a few feet above grt for smell attraction. Have tried other concoctions with everything from tuna to marshmallows to molasses. All of it worked to one extent or another. Just decided to go with less mess and one "ingredient" to keep it simple and cheap. Like anything else use what you feel works best. Iowa trapper on YouTube just uses dry cat food and catches 1000+ a year so I figured it was good enough for me. I use the cheap cat food as well. Nothing else and I catch a good many coons just around the house. Some nights out of 5 traps I catch 3 or 4. Works really well in a box trap on fox as well. Our rural fox and coon go from house to house eating cat and dog food left out so it’s something they actually are looking for.
