There are very good reasons why over quarter of American households have cats. Cats aren't for everyone, but a massive number of Americans love cats, myself included. I love dogs too.
Keith I got nuthin against cats, dogs, cars and bicycles. Collar your cats, keep them home, license and pay the tax on em (like dogs), inspect an register your bike, (like cars). If a cat aint home, and doesn't have a registered collar and tag, it is feral and it is open season on them in many places.

Keith We’ve always have had a pair of indoor cats over the last 40 years. Cats fit our lifestyle….we can go to camp for 3 days a week, cats are fine while we’re gone. Can’t do that with a dog.

We took in the neighbors neglected cat about ten years ago. It managed to survive ten and twenty below zero temps for most of its life until the parrot was gone and it became an indoor/outdoor cat.
I was never partial to cats but this one won me over. The thing would follow me room to room and lie down wherever I happened to be. It would sleep on my chest. You have to come grips with what little affection a cat is capable of displaying. They ain't dogs.
The cat went missing about three weeks ago and I still find myself checking the door on the outside chance it might still be alive. Never thought I'd shed a tear over a cat. I was wrong.
Cats are place oriented and need time to adjust to new surroundings. Feed it well, show it some affection and it will hang around. That's not saying it won't doubledip at a neighbors place. I had a cat, Midnight, when i was about 10. He would come and go on his own, sometimes be gone for a few days. Turns out he was living anothet life at the neighbor’s place, a kid a year older than me. They had a bunch of cats. I guess Midnight cane back to our place for some R and R. He ended up with FIV, the cat aids. Dad told me to day goodbye because Midnight was sick and he had to take him to the vet to be put down. It didnt dawn on me for a while, but the vet was 25 miles away and Dad was back in 15 minutes….

We raise beef have a 40x70 barn. Have 3 cats, most stay around some not. They kill rats, mice, birds, it's good. Get them young fence off an area, soft food routine. I am allergic to cats but they have a place in the barn. Oh have the wife tend them, pet them, etc. They like that attention, ( the cats)

Outside cats kill birds and small game. Those studies that estimate and extrapolate how many song birds cats kill have a lot of shock value, but make no attempt to show how much is additive or just compensatory mortality. Song birds and small mammals have extremely high natural mortality rates and populations are constantly turning over, a fact that's never mentioned in the "keep your cats in the house" shock studies.

We have mice and spider problems every fall. My wife brought home a calico that is probably 6 months old now. We are spider and mouse free so far. The best part about it is the cat doesn’t really like people.
Looks like he needs another year;-)

If you get a male and don't get it fixed, you can get a new cat every couple of years. It allows time to take a break from cats.

My advice would be to get all their shots, feed them enough that they take up in the barn, but never pet them. If you do then every time you try to get anything done they will be rubbing on you leg. Get down on the ground and they will rub on your face. Yuk

Outside cats kill birds and small game. And opossum eat ticks. Yes, the cats get some chipmunk, frog, rabbit, birds, mice, squirrels and even had a weasel brought up once. But they stick close to the house and barn and I don't like what they kill in those areas. I used to see mice in the barn every time I went in or moves something. I seldom see any since the cats starter living up there. Get them fixed or you will be like us. We have house cats 2, detached grage outside house cats and barn cats that also double for outside cats at dads house. Dad now has 2 house cats. Everyone we know that even though they wanted cats now has cats. We have been getting them fixed 2 to 4 a month or so lately. Had a car fix my 10 year Olds out side cat last week. Never thought I would dig a hole for a cat I'm hard September dirt. Thank goodness for the pick ax.
