An indian friend of mine told about him using that term at a POW WOW meeting. He caught holy H..L from the indian women.

Apparently to them that term makes a woman a White mans (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman)! Not good.

This was 30 years ago he told me that.

I went to a public meeting last night about a proposed new road name for a Squaw Creek Road. One of the residents on the road suggested Squawk Creek Road last night. He was told that won't fly either. Another guy proposed Raccoon Road but then they said that won't fly. It was a tense meeting. There's a Squawk Creek in Florida. The guy last night got pounded for suggesting they change it to Squawk Creek Road.

And in Australia, that word is common usage and not deemed offensive!

Bankhead Lock and Dam aka Lock 17 on my Warrior river back home sits atop Squaw Shoals. And the lock chamber is fed by Indian Creek.

So named for the "native american" town that once sat at the junction of said creek and river.

BTW the full name of the river is the Black Warrior River named in honor of Chief Tuscaloosa which in English means black warrior.

Everybody wants something to be offended by. my son makes a type of smoked fish marinated in maple syrup thats just delicious. The west coast Indian that taught him how called it squaw candy.

Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge in NW Missouri was renamed by the feds to Loess Hills NWR.
It was done as Obama was leaving office.
It will be Squaw Creek Refuge until I’m dead.

This is old news, although DoI Sec Haaland may have accelerated it. There is a governmental body called "Board of Geographic Names" who have been changing "offensive" names from say USGS Topographic Maps for a a number of years already but also changing Euro-American names "back" to native names. I used to know a guy who's proudest accomplishment was helping change "Mt. McKinley" to "Denali".

Some of the names were actually sort of funny and who really knows how they got started. There was "Bloody Dick Creek" somewhere out West. Now maybe it actually came from something sexual or maybe it was just a guy's name that he got from something else, like Ole Joe meeting Corn Pop but in reality Corn Pop got the best of him so Ole Joe became know as "Bloody Joe". But some names were pretty obvious. In southwest South Dakota we used to have "Squawhumper Table" and "Little Squawhumper Table". Those two have been gone for a while ...

I guess pretty soon we will have to rename the Grand Tetons because the name comes from the French designation meaning "Big Breasts," except the "breast" word used begins with "t" and ends with "its."

In my mind after a few centuries the origin of a word no longer matters, especially when the origin is from another language. At some point it just becomes a word and there is no special connotation, just a meaning. But then we have people who search far and wide to find something to be offended about. Does anyone actually know if the origin of Native American language words for their women are any less offensive to the perpetually offended?

I refuse to worry about it. Its a waste of time to worry about offending someone. Anybody reading this that can honestly say they never had someone say something offensive to them? I fail to see how the word squaw could be offensive.

They renamed all the bases around here too. They will still be ft Pickett a d ft lee until I'm gone too. I'll never use the new names, they sound stupid for 1 thing. Guess that's the times we live in " stupid times"!
