I have some white silk liner socks that are quite old but like new. They add a lot of comfort and warmth. Unfortunately I usually forget to wear them.

I have some friends I hunt with that swear by alpaca wool socks. Said they are the warmest they have ever worn and wick moisture well. Eric I was thinking of trying a pair

Mad - glad you like them! I am eager for mine to arrive. The size may be an issue. My size 14 feet are cramped in most socks.

Agreed about too much material crowding causing lack of wiggle room and warmth. However, I do like the cushioning of thick socks, especially thick on the bottom. And since my stash is low, I am washing my remaining socks very frequently.
I knew a guy who fought in WWII. He fought through the Battle of the Bulge where the winter weather was very extreme. He had one pair of socks and one pair of boots which were on his feet constantly. He got frostbite and trench foot. His feet bothered him for the rest of his life. He used to scoff at folks who liked to go camping. He said he went camping once - from 1941 to 1945.

I ordered some more pairs of Darn tuff. I only had two pair anyway. This thread inspired me to do that. These do come in lightweight, middle weight and heavyweight wool, with cushioning . Options are half cushion, full foot cushion, or none. With the lifetime guarantee, you can't go wrong. They are perfect in boots , no bunching up, nice air flow to warm. Nice colours too

With all the business this has generated, they should give me a discount.
In their size chart they include xxl. However that was not an option on the socks that I ordered. Hopefully the xl will be comfortable.
I read some of the unusual stories about returned socks.

I have heard good things about Smart Wool but never tried them myself.
Don't get hung up on "heavy" wool sox. you don't want your boots jammed full with bulky sox. They will be warmer if your sock is adequate and your boots are loose
Also, CLEAN sox are way warmer than bulky dirty sox Agreed, which is why multiple pairs of socks are carried in a GI rucksack. And not just for warmth either, wet feet break down easier. We were taught to take advantage of any down time to swap for clean dry socks when on the march.

Well the new Darn Tough socks arrived today. They are very nicely made and seem like a good choice. They are comfortable, but snug. The packaging says XL fits 12.5 to 14.5. I wear 14 or 15 depending upon the specific boots. If these perform well, I will wait for XXL next time. They are in the washing machine.
I will definitely try out some of the other recommendations. Maybe my sweet wife will splurge for some of the buffalo socks for Christmas. She sort of likes me.
Mike - I am eager for your report on the buffalo wool socks.
Thank you to everyone for your friendly discussion and recommendations.
