I caught 5 then 2 the following weekend. I haven’t trapped this line for 3 years so they were piled up in there. Even after 7 catches I’m still seeing fresh tracks. Population increased about ten years ago due to fires to the south. In general they’re more common now than they were when I was a kid

That’s a crazy amount of predators in one area.

Wolves love eating wolverine and will even kill them in a crap. This was my experience.


I traded the skull for a pair of slidders for my Arctic Cat Lynx 2000 so that was not a complete loss.

Last intentional wolverine catch of the year. I snapped all the boxes and cubbies on Sunday. Just the wolf traps left now. Catching up on fur before spring starts and things get really busy again.

Second attempt at frost scraping wolverine is going alright. Just having a smoke break and I’ll finish that up

I’ve got another 4 wolverine skinned and a lynx fox and wolverine still frozen whole so plenty to keep me busy for now. 2 wolves to finish as well. Lots of field work coming up so I’ll do what fit I can depending on how much energetic I am after long days of snow surveys on a record snowfall year.

Know nothing about wolverine but wondering about putting boxes up in trees like for marten to try keep away from things like wolves. Imagine wolverines can climb not too bad in the right tree. Little more work for trapper of course.

Again know nothing about wolverine but must be a reason they not box trapped in trees. Perhaps wolves hitting the ground boxes not common enough to bother w tree boxes. Maybe refusals like female marten to go up tree at times?

First time in my life ive had a wolverine eaten so the occurance isnt common for me. Mice can do a lot of damage on the ground too. Skunky lure will bring in wolverine and keep wolves away. They avoid it at all costs here.

Busy evening in my Messy warehouse. Catching up on the big fur. No more traps to look at but I’m still Trying to add to the wolf effort on skidoo rides when I can. Lots of odds and ends to get done while patiently waiting for my time off this spring. Got a good chunk of time off starting in one month. Big grizzlies, chubby geese and muskrats are all on my mind as I work on fur tonight. I have one skinned and boarded so far and now I’ve got to get these two hefty bulls skinned. Better get back at it. Works starts in 7 hours. I’m sure I’ll be needed in a few strong cups of coffee in the morning.

Few pics of Bobby on some hot wolf tracks. We heard them howling and found their tracks but they had a headstart and all got up onto the thick timber. Seen a pair later on the evening and then 4 right after the second picture above was taken. Was awesome to see 4 grey wolves pop out of a heat wave at last light but In the mirage they looked way closer than they really were. At least we got to drive fast for a while.

All my pictures from a couple quick rides into the mountains can’t be loaded. Panoramic pictures. I had 5-6 wolves on the run the first day and spotted a wolf going over the top of a high mountain near last daylight. Because it was my first time making my trails it took much longer than usual to get to where I last seen the big black wolf as I had to travel slow to avoid rocks. I found the tracks once more but it took too long to follow them in rock solid snow and bare ground. At this point it was getting dark and even though they were headed InTo familiar country I had to call it off for my own safety. It snowed the next day and the family had Easter dinner with my grandpa. Monday morning came and the weather wasn’t looking too good. By early afternoon the mountains slowly came into view just enough to make me take off to the first cabin to see what the weather was like up there. The weather was actually getting pretty good and With all the fresh snow I would just have find tracks and I’d know they were fresh and oh so easy to follow. All previous tracks were completely erased as was most of my trail from the previous trip. Perfect tracking situation though with the perfect 4 inches of fresh if only I could just find tracks but unfortunately the route I picked out of three solid choices wasn’t the one that was destined to intercept the pack I didn’t find any tracks but it was still good to see some my good old hunting grounds again. Lots of memories of successful past hunts as I travelled along taking my time. I was about 2-3 hours from home when the weather turned to a flat flight and light snow situation. Took forever to get back to my main trail I made earlier and I came close to going over a couple drop offs that could’ve done some minor damage to me and my skidoo. Luckily I was watching closely but if you’ve ever made a new trail in the mountains in flat light with sections where you’ve got no Willows, rocks or trees to focus on them you know what I’m talking about. On the long completely flat white rolling hills I’d stare at my dash as long as I dared to avoid the awful vertigo that is an awfully uncomfortable situation. Luckily i didn’t have any trouble besides having to drive slower that usual and I managed to get back to aklavik then hook up to my trailer and load two skidoos and a sled managing to get home to Inuvik via ice road by 1257am. I could write a bunch more about the one picture I was able to post but these wolverine aren’t going to skin themselves.

Ryan nobody can say you are a lazy man, you work hard for everything you have! Flat light in terrain like you described is the absolute worse to deal with.

When I lived in. Nome we used a gps. Older model garmin. Could go point to point with it when out in the open and foggy. Long as we knew more or less where we were and weren’t going to go over any drop offs.

Thanks for the ride along and the pictures , you've had another great season of making memories with Bobby on the trap line and snowmobiling for wolves . A cabin picture of your put up fur would be great to see !

Almost every one I caught at my camp had at least one white foot.

Big dark male with just a few markings. Its the last one to get done for auction. I’ll keep a couple small ones for tanning practice this summer when i get restless. Couple big males I skinned on Wednesday will both be finished up and dried ASAP as will two more wolves. I have one week to finish as much as I can to meet our deadline for shipping to north bay.

I could tell this wolf had white feet from a long ways away. Looks weird to see a black wolf with what looked like no feet at first.
This is a stalling post. Sometimes I make a few before picking up the knife. Worth mentioning that some of my friends had successful wolf hunts yesterday. One pair of them got 5 and the other duo got 3 in completely separate areas. Crazy part is I had previously tracked both packs within the last 6 days. Lots of more wolves out there.

That one is really nice, Ryan. I always look for that necklace bling. With marten also. Maybe the one white foot denotes a related line ? Thank you for sharing your catches.
