So is a blacktail like a whitetail with mule deer antlers? It looks like a whitetail in the face and coat color, but those look like mule deer antlers. Subspecies of mule deer.

If I remember right from some class at OSU is that whitetail can interbreed with Mule deer and Mule deer can also interbreed with Blacktail but Blacktail and Whitetail are a no-go.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

There are interesting and conflicting theories about the three species of deer in North America. It was once thought, or so I read, that blacktail were the ancient deer that the other two sprung from. However, I think more recent DNA work mihht throw some doubt on that.
