I’ve heard a coyote make a similar sound. When I first heard it I thought it was a hen yelp, until the coyote stepped into view. I’d heard they make “turkey” sounds but didn’t believe it until I heard it.

I never knew mountain lions “chirped” either. I had roosted some birds across a mountain in NM and it was dark by the time I was on my way down. I’d already marked an elk trail so I wasn’t too worried about getting down in the dark since I’d climbed it in the dark. What I thought was strange is this “elk” that kept following me. I thought the sound I heard was a cow elk making that sound they make. What I couldn’t understand was why it wasn’t spooked. It wasn’t until the next day I was having lunch with my Aunt and Uncle and mentioned that crazy elk and my Aunt hit my arm and said you Dummy, that was a mountain lion! She pulled something up on her phone and played it and asked if it sounded like this? I said yeah, ain’t that a cow elk? I had a chill come over me when she showed me a video of a mountain lion making that sound!! I normally ascend and descend the mountain with no shell in the chamber for safety…after that it was kept loaded.

Yeah that would be a little too close! Also, if you don't have one down in the pipe, your carrying a stick.
