Figured I would start a thread since things are slow in the fur handling forum.i had decent success with the orange bottle tan on a mink and a nutria so I decided to get the rittels ez 100. So far I fleshed the hides salted for 24 hours then re salted for another 24 hours. I relaxed the furs in salt water for about ten hours. 2 lbs of salt to one gallon of water. I just made my pickle with safee acid I did 2 oz to four gallons of water. Added the hides and checked ph. The ph is reading 1. If anyone is interested I'll keep posting along the way and let you know the results.

My experience is extremely limited, I've only used the orange bottle. Thought I did good till I got my fur back from Moyles. There is definitely a knack to tanning fur correctly, I hope you do good, and if not, don't quit...keep records, like Boco preaches, and get better! Looking forward to watching your progress!

Today was day three in the pickle I was supposed to shave and degrease but ran out of time. Checked the ph it had climbed to a 2 so I added a tiny bit of acid to get it back closer to the 1 range. Tomorrow I will flesh and degrease. Biggest lesson so far is to find ph strips that go 1.1 1.2 not from 1 to 2. I would feel better if I could more finely tune the ph.

McKenzie taxidermy has your PH strips and anything else for tanning.

Ok so I re fleshed and decreased shaved what I could but now realize it wasn't enough. Took out of the pickle and went straight to the tanning instructions.this was a much debated topic on another forum but the maker of the product did say not to neutralize. After about sixteen hours in the tanning solution I pulled them.the tanning solution did go towards a 3ph while I was at work versus the 4 it was supposed to be at. Once I pulled them I oiled them and rolled them up to sweat. After about six hours I unrolled and hung to dry.i started breaking them as soon as they would turn white when I pulled on a spot.one is done drying and is broke however the ears did slip.however in happy white how it turned out. I plan on sanding some on the thick spots and probably let the wife make some hair bands with it.
