Twenty one!? What a tough old bird!
It is very easy to get attached to a pet of any kind.
I like chickens , they can be affectionate and sweet!!

I have one getting close to that age. I do not know how old it actually is, but I know it's at least 15. We brought her with us when we moved from IL to MS 10 years ago, and she wasn't exactly a spring chicken then!

figure most people have never eaten a chicken older than 2 months
most layers are 3-4 years to reduced production and a soup pot or other secondary use.
so 21 years is about 20 1/2 years longer than the average chicken

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Indian Asils can sometimes live into their forties. 21 isn't even close to the potential lifespan of an Indian Asil.

A little chicken soup will help them get over it.

Well speaking of chickens Or I should say eggs. The wife brought home a dozen store bought eggs the other day. They were marked jumbo. 8 out of that doz were double yolkers. I've never seen that before. I don't even member ever seeing one double youlker In a doz store bought eggs.

Consider that Native Americans ate dogs and preferred puppies. Some tribes included puppy in their traditional Festivals as a gourmet morsel. I guess it's all a matter of taste? laugh And this was probably posted in bad taste, by me.

Old chickens are about one and a half year olds when it comes to layers.

If you buy a chicken to lay eggs for you.... is it (the chicken) your food?

I ask this because I don't name my food.... i.e. quail, broiler chickens, etc. I occasionally (not very often) name my layers because they provide me food via their undeveloped offspring, not themselves.

My layers provide food when they lay eggs. When their production slows, they become food as I get a new flock. Our layers don't get named either. I can't tell 20 of the same breed apart that easy.

The drumsticks were both gone, she'd been using hand made prosthetic legs for several years. She was a famous bird! You just don't eat a chicken that famous all at once.

The layers at the chicken farm near here get changed out every 12-18 months so most would be under 2 when butchered.
