My two black labs are INSANE with food. If they can’t find extra food they’ll eat horse manure!

I dumped a bunch of beavers out in a pasture and they found them. They ate the oil sacs as I can smell it on their breath. They have squirts that would make cows jealous!

Not funny when it happened but funny now. The neighbors golden gobbled down 10 lbs. of castor drying in the fur shed when castor was $80/lb. He pooped castor for 3 days.

We have a 1 1/2 year old chocolate lab.

I bet he wolfs his 2 cups of Science Diet nuggets down in 15 seconds

I'll have to time him one day

Our Yellow lab we had for 11.5 years always wolfed down his daily ration in seconds. I believe it part of the genetics as breeders have been breeding for certain traits and food consumption could be a part of the genetic makeup.
Not unlike their wild relatives who gorge on their kills and then lay around, belch, burp and toss up and eat again. we were travelling and I put 5 days worth of dog food in a bag and while unloading I left the bag in the back with the door opened. When I came back to get the next load the bag was on the ground and in less then a minute 4 days of food was gone.

My chocolate lab scarfs her food down pdq. A minute or less
Every lab I've owned has been a glutton, they will eat as much and as often as you want to let them eat.
The oldest daughter is always feeding her snacks, now she's as big as a barrel and totally worthless for hunting..

I wonder if the breeds history as a water dog in cold water didn't turn up the metabolism a notch or two.

My Mountain Cur doesn’t want to stop eating. I had labs and beagles the same way. So I would guess labs aren’t the only ones

Since childhood I have had more than a dozen labs in all colors. Some wolf their food down and others eat when they are hungry. I have noticed that the females are slightly more prone to wolfing the food and males are less likely. My last male and current male ate the same general time every day. Current lab is fed in the morning but does not eat until 8pm give or take a few minutes. He's been that way since day one.

I have also noticed that puppies fed as a group have this tendency as there is constant competition for food. Although the competition is no longer there the habit stays with them.

My daughter is a vet tech and says labs are also far more prone to eating socks, underwear, golf balls and rocks.

330-You are going to have to stop posting that picture! My Yellow had to be put down last May and due to health reasons I have not replaced him...yet. Seeing the picture of your pup makes my heart ache for one of my own.

Honestly, though...keep the pictures coming!

The darker the lab, the less they shed. Blacks shed the least, yellows the most and chocolate somewhere in the middle. Ours always have a big bowl of food and they don't house it down in fact they won't eat it at all if they think they'll get people food, and that, they house down.

Interesting that so many have had labs that just gorge. The three that I had I would free feed and never became fat. I know it’s unusual and free feeding is not recommended.

They lived to 13-14 years and were never fat. The three of them were knuckleheads and ate socks and chewed the heck out of everything in sight, it seemed, while puppies. All three were from Mayo Kelloggs kennels.

They were #1,2,and 3 the best dogs I have had. I heard you only get one “great dog” per lifetime and he was in those three.

I’ve had a black lab by my side for most of my 60 years on earth. Heard it said a long time ago that a lab is for the person that never wants to eat a sandwich alone. So very true, they are chow hounds.

Can’t imagine life without one of the hounds beside me.
