I believe it would be costly and require a huge amount of paperwork to get it into the US!

If you are shooting bull musk ox, the horns are worth a noticeable amount of money. The custom knife makers use Ox horn for knife handles. Again, somewhat difficult to get your animal parts into the US, but might be canadian knife makers using it. There has been Canadian horn brought into the US. Your canadian Ox are supposed to be larger than the Alaskan. The bull horns are larger as well.

When running around all that open country do you see Arctic Hares? Ever shoot them? Eat them? Th hide is worth some money with taxidermists.

We don't get Narwal in the western Arctic, only beluga and maybe a Beuhead this summer.

The muskox we get near Aklavik are Alaskan / Greenlandic muskox. From the release at Norvic Island I believe? They came from the Alaska North Slope anyways. There are Canadian muskox east of Tuktoyaktuk.. the arctic hare are only found on the arctic arcapelago Islands . I shot one on Banks Island one time. It was good eating. Tasted like rabbit.

That's all hunters go after now 8' or smaller as with the American endangered species listing the only market is for Canadians with 8' walls. It's cold in Canada can't build houses with cathedral ceilings.

In the US the marine mammal protection act, I believe, only requires indigenous people to live within 50 miles of the coast. I don't think it differentiates between indian and eskimo. Pretty sure there are "indians" in the US who traditionally hunted marine mammals.
For the most part F and W enforcement doesn't do much with marine mammal enforcement in Alaska. They are concerned with head hunting of walrus and spend some time with that.
However, quite some years ago one officer got interested in enforcing the 50 mile rule. He found out a resident of Kobuk had hunted walrus with a relative in Kotzebue. He and another agent went to Kobuk. They went into this family's freezer and took a piece of walrus meat. However, the guy in Kobuk had a sister in law who also worked for F&W service. She raised caine with her bosses. Nothing ever came of the issue.
There are a lot of Eskimos that live in villages on the Yukon R. and Kuskokwim river. Plenty of them hunt marine mammals.

They had one show up in Emmonak a few years back. Was sitting in the water eating salmon from the pictures I saw. Glad we dont have to worry about them here.

Try post it on the for sale section on Taxidermy.net

Make sure all the paperwork is legal hopefully find a Canadian buyer, that would be easier.

In the vid I could tell the rifle was a long action, so figured 300 or 338. 270 will certainly do….lol. I have a coworker who says 303 will bounce off a moose a 100yds, but he knows that caliber been used for over a century in Churchill for bear defence. But he also asked yesterday if I was expecting to get more that $3 for my put up beaver……lol
I think I’ve got a spot for a big bear.

Correction, think I heard him say 300WM in the beginning of the vid

FYI, i do not think you can import polar bear skins anymore to the Communist Country of the the United States. The King has has declared via the Marine Mammal Act.

Import, Export, Direct Take, Transport, Purchase, and Sale or Offer for Sale or Purchase

General MMPA Restrictions

When setting restrictions for threatened species, the Service has generally adopted prohibitions on their import; export; take; transport in interstate or foreign commerce in the course of a commercial activity; sale or offer for sale in interstate or foreign commerce; and possession, sale, delivery, carrying, transportation, or shipping of unlawfully taken species, either through a special rule or through the provisions of 50 CFR 17.31. For the polar bear, these same activities are already strictly regulated under the MMPA. Section 101 of the MMPA provides a moratorium on the taking and importation of marine mammals and their products. Section 102 of the MMPA further prohibits activities unless exempted or authorized under subsequent sections.

It's not a Federal thing. We have land claims and the Inuvialuit. Inupiaq who live in Canada have the tags. I could ask and if they decided to give me a tag I probably could hunt a polar bear Maybe some day Zi will ask and go camp out on the ice and hunt. Would make a good video.

I think Samuel used a 300 Win Mag on his polar bear. Edwards bear (the one on the thumbnail ) is the one for sale. The second one the shot on the video.

The MMPA is strong legislation. I support it for marine habitats and animals that require its protection. But the polar bear listing is based on unproven theories of polar bear being impacted by global warming. But all surveys done in Canada and Alaska show the population to be stable or increasing.

We should "follow the science." Unless of course, the science doesn't fit our agenda! Then science goes out the window!

And THAT, in a nutshell, is the creed of the US FWS.

One year me and Edward were both doing good with wolf hunting in the mountains. Steady picking up a wolf or two each. We shared information to help each other out rather than keep it all to ourselves. One day he called and said hey were both doing good let’s team up and really try take out some wolves. Edward knew what he was doing on the land so I didn’t feel like he’d slow me down at all and I agreed. We did a few hunts together and didn’t have any luck whatsoever. One morning I called him and said that I’m curious what will happen if we both go separate directions today. We did and both got wolves alone that day.
Later that evening we agreed that we enjoyed hunting together but our luck must cancel each other out.

If the govt owns it why dont they get it tanned?
it will keep much longer without the need of the cold storage expense of a raw skin, and it will likely be easier to market as a tanned pelt.
If they cant market it as a pelt it could make a pile of mitts and mukluks for the people.
Might be easy to sell mitts,I know I would be interested in having a nice pair of polar bear mitts.

Well, after some permit stuff, which was a bit easier than I thought. I should be dropping off a hide to get tanned in a couple weeks. Must say, I never thought I’d ever have a polar bear at home!…lol

International figure 2-3 months. I’ll pick it up from Manatoulin Trucking and probably take a peak at it at International, might as well drop it off same day while I’m in the city. All they require is a copy of my possession permit.
Was typical government though. I called the permit desk inquiring about the status of an import permit by for a polar bear hide and left my name and number last Monday and Wednesday, no return call. Friday afternoon I called again and asked the front desk if the lady at the permit office was off for the week. I was patched through again and this time she picked up right away. Said the permit was done days ago but she didn’t know where to send it, so just sent it to the Steinbach office. Told here about the name, mailing address (physical address the same) and an email address on the one page application……minutes after hanging up, I get a call from the Steinbach office… “hey, we got your permit here”……lol.
I would think that dead wildlife imports would be fairly common in Manitoba with hunter’s bringing trophies back….and they can tell that it’s for me and that I’m not a broker.
I guess my employer is no different though…lol

Were those bears already in the USA Jeff? That might make a huge difference. With the import laws the way they are. I thought Trump would have changed that Obama era law. Maybe this time around he will

I would think any polar bear in the US would be worth a pile of $$. Not sure on Alaska though.

Later that evening we agreed that we enjoyed hunting together but our luck must cancel each other out.

Somehow I missed this post. Thank you Ryan, I tried following Edward a couple times I usually got to a giant snow drift or rock wall that he climbed up and said heck with that and went back to camp and made supper.

Dropped the hide off at International Fur Dressers this morning and had to take a peak at it. Holy smokes what a beast! Now I play the waiting game. This is the 3rd polar bear he’s got and needs 10 to start tanning them. Possibly 6-9 months so I’ll call in late summer. They told me about the permit stuff they have to do and couldn’t believe how fast I got mine. I guess with Ian being the verifying officer and exporter, Bob Windsor the higher up CO in my area helping me out really helps. I had the permit within days. Pleaser doing business with you Ian and thanks!

Looks good glad you got it into their office space to look at. Looks like a lot of work went into the fleshing. I know when they did the one for the Winnipeg Airport there was 5 pails of fat to scrape off.....those sure made some good coyote scratch post when used.

Yes,. they were in the US already. I had a polar bear ruff on my old parkee. Fun Fact: the skin of a polar bear is black, and the hair is not white its clear like fishing line.

I guess that’s why IDF said they do polar bear differently than other bear. Boco said there was another one shot in Peawanuck north western Ontario a few days ago, hope it winds up at IDF….need 7 more!….lol
When he said that they need 10 to start tanning, I thought I’d be waiting years, but they get em form all over, tan them, and ship them out.

that is why the hair is used on a special tied fish fly comes from polar bears.
A word of caution if driving up through Canada to Alaska, the customs people ask if you are going fishing there and specifically fly fishing- then the inspection of the flies starts, of course you are in secondary by that time, and all eyes are on you. Hope this saves a little aggravation to some.(and no it is not the board game called that)

They need a possession permit to have anything polar bear in the US?
After a bit of googling, fly lure makers in the states are careful when using/selling hooks made with polar bear hair to be on the safe side. Canadian fishing sites say “can’t ship outside Canada” on their p bear stuff too.
