Last time I chained up was on La Vida pass in CO. Not usually a big deal that hill. Going west off the interstate there is a sign if the chain law is in. Going east out of Alamosa there isnt. I had been in a motel two days with transmission trouble. Got it fixed late afternoon and headed back to KS with baseball dirt out of Antonita. Was sunny in Alamosa. Thought it looked a little grey but headed up the hill. I never made it to the chain up area before I spun out and had to back onto the shoulder of the two lane highway. After a bit a highway patrolman came along and stopped. Kept his red and blue lights on behind me while I finished chaining. I got over the top and down the other side. That bear was the only other person I saw till I got back down the other side. Sometimes 20 miles is a Loooooooooooong ways.

Had a buddy hadnt caught up his log book for about a week. Got checked in Truckee at the scale and shut down for 8 hours. (old HOS was 10 and 8 not 11 and 10) Ticket was 2000. This was in the 80's. Lot of money. So he wrote the judge a letter and told him he had a wife and three kids, didnt have 2000 dollars. Judge lowered it to 1200. probably about what he cleared in a month after meals etc. Lot of money for just earning honest money to take care of a family. I never did like California.
