And then I remembered that I auctioned off all of my worldly possessions.

No big deal; I'll buy or make a new BBQ/Smoker. No. No tools. Don't dare buy a good one due to too many unknown neighbors possibly tempted to steal.

Whadda ya think. is there a worthwhile cheap expendable unit I can "share" with the neighbors?

I don't want to get too comfortable in my current temporary housing, but, I need to maintain some level of comfort while my new home is being built.

You’ll have to make a caveman steak!
I’ve had a theft too. Someone got into our garage and stole our moose utility pack off our quad. Didn’t touch anything else. My field guide to mushrooms was in there and my mom bought that for me. That hurts worst of all and the yo-yo probably just threw out anything that was in the pockets. Maybe they will pick a bad mushroom and perish…

Well Els.. if you have read another thread, ahem, you’d know that people are entitled to whatever they want or want to do, your not to be angry and should have left that pack in an even more accessible spot.

Seriously tho, that does suck. Bums.

Rex… hold up that steak, run a lighter across it, feast away like a good Neanderthal!

I resemble that remark.

As for the lighter; i suspect a weed burner may be a bit more appropriate.

As a young man I didn't want to haul a grill around in my old pickup truck. So I grilled quit a few different things on an old oven rack propped up on 4 soda or beer cans. Light me pile of charcoal sometime right on ground sometimes on a cookie sheet. Spread it out set can on each corner throw my rack on there and have at it.
Anyone steals that set up is pretty hard up.

Ice fishing one time I cooked venison steaks on a steel snow shovel on a campfire. Swipe a steel shopping carts and start a fire under it like the rest of the neighborhood.

I have nothing clever to put here.

in a pinch get a cast iron skillet rippenn hot , salt the steak and toss it in 3-4 minutes till it has a nice sear , flip it and go till that side has a nice sear

OK , it's done no need to over cook a steak

edit : Rippenn is a technical term for just past where smoke starts to come off your cast iron but a few seconds before the smoke starts rolling off your pan and filling the kitchen.

Build a fire. Set a couple rocks around it. Wait for a nice bed of coals. Lay an old refrigerator grate on the rocks and cook your steak. There is no way to get a better steak than cooked over a wood fire. Those charcoal briquets ought to be banned. Its a crime against nature to kill an animal and then cook it over briquets.

This is trapperman right? Build a campfire and put it right on the coals.

"Sear your steak directly on the bed of hot coals (not on the grill grates). For a 1½-inch steak, you should plan to cook for about 3–4 minutes a side for medium-rare. Midway through searing the first side, give the steak a half-turn to ensure the entire surface has a chance to caramelize on the charcoal."

If you like your steak rare or medium rare try to scare the steer really good. You want it at a dead run. Keep it running for a good 25 minutes for rare, 30 minutes for medium rare. Then cut off your steak and enjoy. It should build up enough body heat to start the cooking process quite quickly, and might actually over cook it if you like your steaks like my Mom eats hers. If you like them that rare maybe try to get the steer at a fast trot rather than a dead run.

A perfect steak starts hours before actual cooking. It must be room temp before going to the fire.

Cut the horns off it and wipe it's butt and it is nearly done.

I gotta get some old ideas out of my head. I've never been too social, so grilling in the shared "lawn" of my double 4-plex campus.would feel like stepping outside the barracks door.

I live only a few minutes away from the property I'm building on. An in-ground fire ring ain't gonna be too conspicuous on a dead end street, and my 70 year old neighbors are unlikely to complain. Maybe an ice pit for the beer would be in order too.

Don't try to use n old refrigerator shelf, as they are Cadmium plated, which contains cyanide and can kill you.
