Do any of you old fur trappers still enjoy setting rabbit boxes? I’ve always loved it as that’s how I started out as a kid. I’m hoping to build six or eight before season. How long do you typically build or how long was the old Pennsylvania rabbit box trap? What about dimensions? You want them to be small and possum proof as possible. I know the internal door and treadle is nice and uniform. My old ones were the raised door and trigger in the back hinged/pivoted on something in the middle. I think setting right along right of ways off roads and around old cemeteries are good places. Rabbit boxes are a great way to get kids involved.

Here some photos of a few of my hybrid designs. Some are 24" models with a single door, a built in slide wire release rear door / bait access door, with added lead weights to increase the door shutting speed. The other ones are 3' long double door models.

Rabbits can come easy or very difficult. It depends upon the time of year. The food source and the location selection of your traps is key if you want to make consistent catches. They can be challenging to catch in the summer months. Due to all the food sources available.

I catch 20-30 every winter to release in the beagle club I’m a member of. Another member traps 30-40 every winter. We both use the same traps and the same bait. I like plexiglass in the back instead of the wire mesh. The biggest tip for these traps in my opinion is a big heavy nail that falls through and locks the door when the rabbit is caught. Cats love coming by and pushing the door open and taking your rabbit, happens all the time. [Linked Image]

Nice looking traps guys. Might have to borrow a few ideas here.

Yes the mail or some internal door latch is a must on this doors here. I thought the rabbits somehow were raising a guy I knew’s doors and the nail stopped it.

I found the wire rear access panel serves 4 purposes for me. It most importantly allows air flow through the trap to carry the bait/lure odor better, it allows great visibility of the bait, and easy baiting / trap clean out and a easy animal transfer after the catch.

Front door transfers can lead to some escapes as any experienced rabbit or other cage use trapper well knows.

I just butt my traps with captures up to a transfer cage, slide up the access wire door, and it is a positive transfer if done properly.

Here's a Pennsylvania Game Commission Rabbit Trap. This trap design I used as a boy & teen.
