Foam the entry hole shut then quickly insert an straw equiped insecticide aerosol can labeled for wasps / bees and spray the inside at different areas. That will kill all the occupants and once all dead knock it down and bag the nest and larvae combs.

It looks like a bald face hornet nest. They are very aggressive hornets.

There will be flight coming back and forth regularly while you are working. It would be best to suit up with some protective clothing to do a safer job. It looks like there may be some ladder work involved.

I'd take a big 55 gallon garbage bag and enclose the nest with it at night. Then I would get some ether or wasp spray and fill the bag up and let it sit till morning and then give it another dose for good measure. Should be dead by then.

Unfortunately a shotgun won’t work in that scenario, lol.

Spectracide wasp and hornet spray is what worked best for me last year. They were hammering my apple tree - Honey Crisp apples. Not sure where there nest was. They travel pretty far for food. It kills them pretty quick. Definitely get them late night or just at first light before it warms up. I bought mine at Menard's .[Linked Image]

Walk up slowly and quietly and spray raid right up in the entrance hole.
If they are on a tree branch you can light them on fire with a torch of burning paper.

Not sure if y’all have ever set back and observed hornets…but during the day and even at night they have guards guarding the nest. Don’t believe me? Walk up with a flashlight and get close, lol! Hornets are tricky and smart. They were smart enough to build the nest so it can’t be knocked down easily with the lights there, lol.
It would be pretty cool to look at through a thermal and see what it looks like and if you can pick up the individual guards.
Good luck with whatever route you take. And don’t forget to video the process so you can share!!!

Looks to be motion activated but is there some way you can get the lights to come on. Heat might run them off. It might catch on fire but at least the hornet problem will be solved.

That's my method. I built a box that I plug the shop vacuum into. Where the hose comes in I set an expanded metal paint roller screen to catch the hornets and chew them up.

If you move slowly you can put a ladder up right next to the nest and get within reach. Or you can tape the hose through a pole to reach the nest. Start at the entrance and work slowly so you don't get a cloud of them boiling out. Just vac up the guards then maybe a bump to get more coming out. Keep at it until you've got most all of them then knock the bottom off the get at the combs. Vac up what you find there.

Kind of slow but it works and allows me to offer the service as a paying gig without having to get a PCO license.

now maybe we should ask

How does an EOD guy rig that for instant crush pressure?

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I was never that good at nondestructive detonations. I usually liked to use more C-4 than was really necessary. The shed would be a casualty. Even a small flex linear shape charge would be too much.

A cool night or cool early morning you get them where you live. Sprayer ethah in that hole and they drop like rocks. The best thing I found for them yet.

Put your thumb over the hole and pull the nest off the building and put it in a large trash bag!!!

Set the building on fire!!!

Spray the nest at night with wasp and hornet spray and then again in the morning if you see any activity.

There's 3 good options for you!! grin grin

I have had a few of those on the house and garage over the years. That one looks small enough that when you go to spray it (after dark) the spray will tear into the nest enough for you to soak it and kill the whole nest. On larger ones I tear a small hole in the side with the saw tip on a pruning pole. Wait about 10-15 minutes, that’s all the time you need for the nest to calm down, and then spray.

I'm not messing with it. I have no problem with disarming a bomb, but bees scare the crap out of me. Once while working an f100 crash, I got stung on my lip, and my face swelled up like a basketball.
