Not very many trees in KS a climber would work on and never one where u want it. Mobility has a lot of advantages when hunting new ground or mature bucks. There's a reason your best shot at killing mature buck is the first time you set a stand. And if you hunt a lot that's a lot of stands.

I’ve used one and have shot plenty of deer out of it. It is different for sure. I’ve done full day sits from well before sun up till after sun down without getting out. Your ‘boys’ will remind you the next day. I will say that it offers a lot when it comes to quiet. No noisy climber or creaking ladder. Also no worries of falling out if you drift off for a bit.

I don’t use it anymore. It just isn’t worth it to me.

If you want even more mobility, get yourself a good pair of pole climbers. Don’t cheap out…you need the real deal. The junk ones are near impossible to climb with.

kinda spendy though and cant use them on public ground in many states and some private landowners dont like people using them either.

Saddle advantages...

You're setup so that your tree is between you and the deer.
Safest way to sit in a tree. You're always attached to the tree and when your at height there is no fall risk, youll just swing. Rope climbing is the safest method of climbing a tree.
You can rotate completely around a tree.
Not limited to straight limbless trees. Ultimate trees for saddle hunting are double/triple trunk trees.

Climbers suck.

Climbers don't suck. They're mobile, comfortable and get you up a tree fast. I'm assuming you'd be an advocate of wearing a safety harness. My harness is basically a saddle and can be used in almost identical fashion. The only shot that presents a hard shot for a stand hunter is a deer coming in from the off side of the tree. I can rotate 360 on a stand with minimal movement. There's no advantage to a harness when the animal comes in from behind you. You're adjusting...with a rope in your way.

I hunt oaks in southern Maine. There's countless trees I can climb to thirty feet without hitting a limb. Northern Maine is softwoods. I can disappear in limbs and even use them to climb.

I toyed with getting a harness last year and realized they weren't a good fit for me.

Safety harness is not the same as a saddle. A drop with a safety harness is going to hurt because you have slack in the system. In a saddle, you do not have slack in the system. Also people dont have there harnesses attached to the tree as they are climbing up. so if theres a failure with your climber, you are coming down. A saddle you are attached to the tree from the time you start climbing till you climb back down.

The tether does NOT get in the way on shots. You use the tether to give you stabilization which is great when youre trying to shoot at something that is almost directly underneath you .

There are a few guys that use the bottom part of the climber to get in the trees when using a saddle. Sorta like the two-tether climbing method or one sticking.

Saddles just aren’t for everyone. If I hunted public with no pines or oaks I “might” entertain the idea, but I don’t and can pick a trail and find a tree. I can hunt open quail woods pines and the deer look up but pay me no attention. Get on the edge where pines meet hardwoods and they spot you from 300yds away. Get in the hardwoods and you only have to get about 10-12ft and they pay you no attention. Our deer are weird, lol.
I’m curious to see how my son likes his this year.

I’m 71 and got a saddle so I don’t have to carry a climber half mile or more. They definitely have their place. I’ll take a climber any day over saddle, much more comfortable for me and quicker. They’re both great systems

Hey SNIPERBBB - you can teach an old dog new tricks, but not all old dogs care to learn one.
I'm on Saddlehunter.com too. Don't post much but check in there everyday. This season will be my 4th or 5th year in a saddle. I LOVE it and will never go back to stands.

When life gets me down..... you know hunting/trapping season is closed.

I look at things with a sweat factor. Am I going to sweat more climbing up in a climber or throwing together a saddle.
What about time? I can get up a tree in my climber and possibly shoot a deer faster than the videos I’ve seen of them mounting everything. If I’m going to carry anything in, it’s not going to be half a dozen sticks.

5 minutes tops going full speed. I'm using rope methods, either SRT or two tether.

One thing I'll give the saddle community is much thanks for Tethrd climbing sticks. I bought a set postseason last year and can't wait to use them this fall. I love everything about them.

I’ve been looking at them.

It’s been over a decade since I’ve done any real treestand hunting. Having done most of my hunting in bur oak, ash, and crooked boxelder, it’s always been hang-ons.

It’d be nice to try one for a few hours before committing to the system. I just can’t for the life of me see them being comfortable for a few hours, let alone an all day sit!

But the guys that use them love them.

I have switched to a rock climbing style harness for safety, rather than the usual 4-point style. I’ll never go back to the 4-point style.
