Coyotes have been on my trapping agenda for over 50 years. Other than wolves and wolverines, they are probably my favorite trapping quarry. Here's f few pictures of memorable coyotes.

This is a typical early-season coyote from east-central Idaho.

This is a summer coyote that was released in north Idaho.

Peeking out through the summer forbs. A pretty lady.

This was "Mutton", my pet coyote. His "security blanket" was a #2 Victor coil. Carried it everywhere.

Wiley. My pet coyote as a pup. Feeding him white mice out in the yard. He did that up in the pounce thing. Had never seen a mouse before. I think Mom Dad big Sister just keep them fed till they get good at hunting. They are born hunters.

Got loose and stayed out all night. Wife gave him stuffed animals to tear up and play with. Next morning yard was full of kids stuff he drug home including one of those big wheel tricycles. I managed to find who owned most of it.

They are best left in the den or killed. Was 7-8 when he chewed my wife up. I was "off grid" trapping. She shot it.

His pee was good stuff. I think cause he was not scared in the collection pen.

PS his tail was not bobbed. Just the picture angle

danny -

My coyote only made it to 2-years old, then disappeared. Went everywhere with a pet raven and his trap. Would leave for up to 2 weeks at a time, then return. Never got aggressive; always happy to return home.

I grew up without coyotes. And I wish I could go back to that time, but I can't so I kill every coyote I can
Always a firearm in the car or on my shoulder when I'm out and about

I know I'm not supposed to hate, but I hate coyotes

Wonderful pics, all.

Coyotes...I think I've been commissioned to do more of those than any other fur bearer. They are always fun to do.

I don't git many purdy coyotes but this one was easy on the eyes and I haven't managed to loose the picture yet.

I should have taken a picture of her chewy stick- she hardly made a catch circle but a wrist diameter half green stick I'd used to help free a wet bobcat had obviously been her focus of attention for a good long while. She would have had to been a beaver to cause it any more grief.

That's interesting info on the "pet" Coyotes.

I like fox trapping, but I have to make a set that will hold one of my areas big ugly worthless coyotes
Fortunately I live in an area where most feel the same as me

Swamp Wolf -

Raising a coyote takes dedication. Most are not a good fit. I tried 4 different ones (from dens) before I found one that seemed non-agressive. Good luck!

Illegal to hold one here in Georgia, unless a special permit is acquired.....and very few of those are issued. Just about have to be a veterinarian

Game warden when I had mine told me he was glad when mine was gone. He knew I collected urine for trapping so tolerated it. No dispatch law or season on them so if I kept my trapping license valid I wasn't violating any regs. Said he got a lot of calls from people who thought it was illegal. I would put him on a leash and walk around town sometimes. Got a bbq joint here thats popular with KC folks. I think they were calling. Got funny looks when someone would ask what kind of dog it was and I told them it wasn't a dog. He wouldn't let strangers get to close. I got lucky he bit my wife and not someone else like a kid. I won't do it again.

Thank you, Swamp W., NY, and JK. Jack, I bet having a wild beastie like that coyote was a great first hand opportunity for study of instinctual study. And for art reference.

My favorite critter by a mile! Nothing calls me to trapping like yotes! Never had a pet one, been around several that were pets….never worked out for any I knew. I agree also, leave them in the den. I love the animal, but hate what they do…..but they are just doing what yotes are ment to do!

I started trapping coyotes in 1990 because I thought I hated them . Now I would hate to be without them !

If I was to have a painting commissioned , this would be a top contender.

Lots of great pictures fellas.

I wish we were allowed to keep one. I don’t want one for a pet, but being able to collect P would be nice.

This is the first black coyote I caught, and one of the two most memorable. The second most memorable bit me. Twice! I’m a slow learner. In the pic he has a chunk of my pants, my drawers, and my leg in his mouth. Then he bit my death ray and wouldn’t let go. I finally gave up and shot him.

Yes it does.
I still have that piece of blue jeans tied to the handle of my trap bag as a reminder.

no you dont

I'm watching with great interest those videos by Tim McMechan (timmc1269u on YouTube). His female coyote Weave apparently went out and found a male, orphaned coyote pup and brought it home, so he now has two coyotes living on his property that he feeds and lets into his house. The pup seems tame enough at the moment but I'm very curious what kinds of behavior changes we'll see when he reaches sexual maturity.

It seems like a terrible idea and an accident waiting to happen, but somehow he seems to have avoided trouble thus far.

If any of you have thoughts about it, I'd love to hear them.

If you don't mind my asking, how did this coyote manage to take a chunk of your pants and leg? Did you misjudge the catch circle or think he was caught by a front paw instead of a back? (This will be my first season trapping, so I'm trying to soak up all the lessons I can.)
