I was originally excited to hear you introduced a bill to delist wolves but was quickly disappointed that your bill didn’t remove judicial review. Delisting wolves is the easy part as both Republican and Democrat administrations have gone through the motions. Unfortunately, they never stay delisted as an activist judge ignores science and the wishes of the residents of Wisconsin to put them back on the list.

While this hurts Wisconsin residents, the wolves pay an even greater price. In addition, the ESA takes a beating in the eyes of sportsmen and women. Instead of continuing in this wrong path, please join the effort to delist wolves and remove judicial review so WI can get back to rebuilding the image of wolves in the state and ensuring the money for endangered species is spent in a productive manner and on species that would benefit. I appreciate your consideration.

No. Bryce high-lighted this earlier. She has her own bill.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) introduced the Northern Great Lakes Wolf Recovery Act, new legislation to develop a regional-specific plan based in science to delist the gray wolf population in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.Jun 1, 2023

Baldwin's Bill

You are far more likely to end up with wolves in the threatened status with Baldwin's bill than Johnson's bill. Johnson's bill keeps the listing part of it out of the courts.

As our neighbors from Montana, WY, and Idaho will attest the big thing is keeping that part out of the courts. They can do just fine in court when it comes to the rest.

The difference is stark. One takes the courts out of the delisting decision. The other just adds another layer of bureaucracy that the courts can find fault with.

Sounds like the messages are having an impact. If you would like to see wolves delisted like they have. Been in the western states, take the time to call/email your senator and let them know we want them to vote for the Trust the Science Act. The vote should have been today but was delayed. They are giving the other side time to weigh in. Better yet, get a few of your hunting buddies to call as well. It holds even more weight if you are from WI, Montana. Both of those candidates are in really tough election years battles.

I totally agree, please act now, this is an excellent opportunity to get this passed! The dems think they are buying our votes or this would never have come up at this time.

Hopefully folks take a minute to call or send an email. If we had a few more willing to do it, they would be delisted already.

I did get a canned response. I will post the entire letter, but does anyone want to break it down to simple terms?

Dear Mr.XXXXXX:

Thank you for contacting me to share your thoughts about the recovery of the gray wolf and support for returning wolf management to the state. I appreciate you taking the time to write me about this important issue.

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is the primary federal authority for the protection of wildlife, freshwater fish and vegetation at risk of extinction. For nearly five decades, this seminal piece of legislation has charged the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) with developing management plans for threatened and endangered species to bring our nation’s wildlife back from the brink of extinction.

I support the ESA because it upholds our Wisconsin values of protecting, treasuring and coexisting with nature. Wisconsin has its own proud story of species recovery to tell. Our state’s wolf population has rebounded from near-extinction over the past few decades, surpassing recovery goals set by wildlife biologists. As a result, the USFWS has sought to delist the gray wolves in the Great Lakes multiple times over the past two decades. When successful species like the wolf become delisted, fulfilling the objective of the ESA, it is my hope that local, state and tribal leaders will work together to maintain balanced and healthy populations in our state.

That is why on June 1, 2023, I introduced the Northern Great Lakes Wolf Recovery Act (S.1788), which would delist the gray wolf in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan and create an advisory committee to develop a science-based, regional-specific plan for the gray wolf population. More specifically, the Northern Great Lakes Region Gray Wolf Advisory Committee would be comprised of members representing agriculture, Native and Tribal communities, heads of impacted-state agencies and wolf management experts and scientists to create the final delisting rule for the region. The advisory committee would work with the USFWS during the five-year post-delisting monitoring period, which ensures that the status of the species does not decline or, if an increase in threats or decline in the population do occur, there are plans and measures in place to halt the decline so that relisting is not necessary. You can learn more about this legislation here: https://www.baldwin.senate.gov/news...-to-delist-gray-wolves-in-upper-midwest.

There are a wide range of perspectives on wolf management in Wisconsin, and I believe that we can build on our natural resources heritage and find common ground on the shared goal of a stable, healthy wolf population now and into the future. I am committed to protecting our most threatened and endangered species, and I will continue to support scientists in their recommendations for wolf management plans. As a member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, know that I will continue to advocate for strong funding for wildlife habitat and species recovery.

Once again, thank you for contacting my office. It is important for me to hear from the people of Wisconsin on the issues, thoughts and concerns that matter most to you. If I can be of further assistance, please visit my website at www.baldwin.senate.gov for information on how to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Tammy Baldwin
United States Senator

What a wonderful response from Baldwin. LOL
Every election cycle we see her in northern WI, usually in a hard hat. Otherwise she is a no show, especially regarding Native issues. She proposes junk like her bill and never pushes for passage. This latest bill, unlike the Trust in Science bill, does nothing to eliminate judicial actions, therefore it is as useless as she is.
November can't come soon enough to vote against her.
I wasted my time writing to her asking for support on the Trust the Science bill and eagerly look forward to receiving the same canned response. LOL

I will never say that emailing your senator is waste of time even if she doesn’t change course. Change doesn’t happen until enough get involved and you were added to the list of those involved. That’s a positive.

Sure some times I think it would just be simplier to just work to replace her this November, but it doesn’t mean we don’t try to keep the pressure on her. The more folks that email let her know just how many folks are getting engaged on the discussion. Sportsmen and women used to really work to educate the masses. If I lived up north, I would make sure every sporting good shop and hunter friendly business had a sign up about delisting wolves/who to contact and voter registration forms. Make it know that we are going to work tirelessly with all methods until wolves are delisted.

Here’s the bill that will be voted on by the Senate and with the Dems wanting to de-list wolves before the election it’s an excellent opportunity to get it pushed through.

Maybe we should delist wolves before they kill someone.

They're getting desperate. Best to carry something with a few extra rounds when out in the woods in northern Wisconsin.

I heard the US Senate won’t meet again until after the election, anyone know if this is true? So no vote on the Trust The Science Act? Just a headline thrown out there, [Dems want to de-list Wolves] , just before the election to swing a few votes. I hope no sportsman, farmer, rancher is that gullible.

I heard today was the last day LineJumper.

She doesn’t believe sportsmen and women will show up to vote her out. If wolves are your single issue, Hovde is your choice if you feel they should be delisted without judicial review. There is a clear line in the sand. And if you don’t like her stance now, wait until after the election. She will be embolden to go even farther.

Here is another question. If I wanted to purchase a tanned wolf hide in Alaska and bring back to WI. What would I need to make it legal?
