Dig your dirthole straight down (90°) and at least a foot or more deep. Bed a trap on two sides of hole. No need for a backing, but use small dirt clods for foot guidance.

Mound sets work good in the right circumstances. A beaver house tucked back in the willows on a frozen pond in winter is a good location for a mound set. You can set it up at the same time you are making your under ice beaver sets.

One i like for coyotes, because as soon as i set a trap, it'll rain for 3 days. I got away from step downs and now my favorite set is-- I bed the trap first like a flat set, then i'll dig out a steep angle hole just on the upwind side and pull the dirt to a mound; Just like a ghog hole so my trap is just off the side between the mound and the hole, lure it and run. You got a pic of that?

You got a pic of that? Not at the moment i don't but that will give me an excuse to play with some traps tomorrow. I'll take some pics. Our season comes in the tenth and wouldn't you know they are calling for a half inch of rain that day.

Stuck some lure in an old motor oil quart bottle. Bedded a trap out front. Two days later a coyote in the trap. Never tried it again

Staked hide set. I stake a piece of hide like this and set a trap in front of it. It has to be pretty solid so they pull on it and play with it. I have to hide this in Illinois so I bury it under a small pile of fresh dirt. They find it. Near town people throw out fast food bags and trash. Sometimes there is food in the bag. I saw a bag and picked it up to throw it out one time. It was full of ketchup and fries so I thought ''why not'' and staked it down and got a coyote that night.
Just passin through

Well if looking for odd sets. Some I’ve done that had success were…
Old Pop can with mouse based bait in it has caught a few for me.
So will in old shotgun shell with a little lure in it.
Try a big flashy dirthole loaded with all kinds of raunchy and skunky odors, and no trap at that dirthole, then about 10 feet away a post set with nothing but the visual of post made from fire blackened wood and blend in a trap in front of that. Don’t put urine or lure or anything on that post just the plain post set. Got a few coyotes with that. Pretty canine specific to work on desire to pee on something after rolling or digging in something smelly nearby.
I used a lot of old dog toys over the years like well chewed dog toys and rawhide chews that the dog had worked on for some time and put those at coyote sets and really had decent success with those. An old chewed and slobbered tennis ball got me two coyotes on season second was at the remake. No clue why smell of Fido was interesting to them but it worked and didn’t use any other baits or lures just the old chew toys.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
