This just came through a little but ago. Without the tail, its got me stumped. Northeast Indiana, so I am leaning toward big fox or small coyote. I assume the face shape is because of angle, at first I thought it was a possum when I glanced at the face. Im definitely saying canine. Otter and beaver from the same camera for size comparison.

It could be a domestic dog I suppose. Unusual for this location, but possible. Mange did cross my mind also. Its an odd one. My vote is coyote, but I definitely am not sure of that.

Coyossum. If it turns out to be a previously unknown species thats what we should name it.

It’s a dog of some sort, probably a mutt. If you just look at the face it has a terrier look to it almost.

The guard hair is plastered down to the body from the water, exposing the legs. The head is very marsupial looking.

The first one almost looks plantigrade like a coon/bear/humans/mustelids. The other two are quite obvious.

Way to much daylight between belly and ground to be an opossum, my opinion anyways.

Possum legs are not that long even if you had Mike Tyson pulling and stretching on them...Lol
Also, notice the fur covered foot/toe, not gonna see that on possum.
I am not confident what the critter is based on this photo, but I feel confident that its not a possum.

Definitely a canine. The position of the ears is what makes it tough to tell. I'm leaning towards some kind of domestic dog.

Just look at the feet and you can easily tell it's not a possum.

Here’s proof a lot of people don’t bother to read an entire post. He plainly states the otter and beaver are included for size comparison since they were taken from the same camera. Rant over.

From the time-frame of the previous photos, temp, and water- I wouldn’t think the ice would be thick enough to support the weight of a coyote?

I thought fisher too, but figured it would be way out of their range. Using the size comparison with the other critters the size would be close. I can’t think of a domestic dog with that head shape, that’s why I said a Tasmania devil but that’s a little farther out of range, sorry for joke Bernie

That dawned on me today. If you look at the time/date stamps of open water vs the picture in question, that ice has to be less than 1/2 inch. I am really thinking it is a canine that just took a cold dunk. That area offshore from there is no more than 16 inches deep, so even a fox would be able to jump back out after going through - assuming they can not climb out in deep water- which is something I do not know. Wet and cold might explain the low ears and ratty/mangy look. I may go get the high res image from the card. That beaver in the photo is a new arrival in a place with a zero beaver tolerance, so I will be there in the next couple days.

It looks to be appreciably larger than the otter and the beaver.
Everything but the creature is in focus, which either means that it is moving which causes distortion in the camera, or it is a Bigfoot cub which we all know that Bigfoot is blurry.
