I thought everyone split & pinned the tails, at least while it’s fur out. Even if they think the tail doesn’t matter, it’s presentation
I try to pin them open when flipped also, but it’s harder to find the edge on the smaller critters.
it all depended on who your instructor was and what they taught and was absorbed by the individuals in the class. That 1/4 inch screen goes a long way in tail pressing
Pin holes have to be cut out when sewing the tails together...more labour = less product

Gol dang it No50! I just finished pinning one…lol. Oh well, it’s got a small patch of mouse damage. I’ll have to dig out some screen. Wonder who’d teach a new trapper not to pin or screen any animals tail? They’ll friggin rot, seems pretty straight forward if they’re probably teaching tricks to dry the arm pits & stuff……unless they’re not saying why it’s done.

Doesnt work that way,its about fur handling and educating trappers about the value of a uniform collection to offer the buyers to improve their confidence in our product One more reason why trapper education is so important.to our industry.
With all the mandatory trapper education in the industry the last 30 years, hard to believe pelt handling is even an issue anymore? Of course, if anybody wanted to apply themselves, they can find pelt handling information readily available on the internut and there are probably are a multitude of u-tube videos covering a variety of species.

The interesting thing is if you watch Joe Mattie's fur handling video from 35 years ago he tells trappers to pin tails out and hats are of marten tails.
Uhm, I never seen a marten without a tail, that i sold at FHA being deducted. Marten are graded on color, size, quality (never heard anything about the tail). i am also suspicious about the $18 for a tanned marten tail. That is more than the cost of tanning the whole marten. I will take what the fur buyer stated with a grain of salt.
Really that is correct,Boco quoted CA. dollars. I sell tails from the marten I dress to the Hasidic community in New York for $12 each, which is almost the same as $18 CA.

You probably do know how to handle fur,as do a lot of trappers. From what I have seen some are still learning Why we do workshops and demos like the oldtimers did for us when we were young.
Some may benefit even if you or others dont. Its nice to see the marten prices rising again over the last few years. Helps to offer a good collection to the international buyers.
All good points here, I hate to see furbuyers offering to buy frozen skins, it makes producers lazy and has affected the quality of fur handling in the states. Saying you'll only be discounted $2 for green skins work fine for the buyer when you only get 1/2 or less as a basis of a good quality NORTHERN beaver pelts true value.

^^^^^^^^ I was wrong, he says " fancy garments" . I suspect the fancy garments were those Jewish hats. Either way, it has been known for a long time that marten tails need to be split and spread for drying by trappers.
Found the production date; Make that 29 years ago.

A bit more info. The tail fur from a marten is more than 3 times more valuable per sq inch than the rest of the marten Other than fisher,no other animals tail comes close. Otter is less valuable by far per sq inch compared to the body fur of the otter. Otter tail has very limited use in the fur trade. Master Argeriou and others have tried many ways to work it and it just does not work well in any application. I sell the tanned tails of otter to kids at the pow wow there is little use for them as trim or articles.

Yet, the trapper sees not one thin Canadian dime for taking care of the tail.
Life is hard. It's even harder if your stupid!
