I have heard that rats for example can fit through tiny cracks a fraction the size of their bodies....
I seen a red fox at the top of my garden on Saturday night (I was out checking the traps) and he slipped through the hedge. I inspected the hedge for holes and could not see any big ones... I have the main ones covered with traps...anyway I had to install some make shift fencing yesterday to block off that entry / exit route. Hopefully I'll catch him next time. Fox number 30 (a milestone) is proving a bit ellusive at the moment....that said its only Wednesday...I normally catch them on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night...my theory on that being...the rubbish is collected in the neighborhood on those mornings.

Regards

FE

As a rule of thumb, about any wild animal can get through a hole that it's head can fit through. That is pretty universalo, but does not apply to humans, and I have my doubts about the apes.

If he can get past his eyes he`s through , I have seen Grey`s go through a hole the size of a average man`s fist .

Ive had red fox get hip caught in 7" snares, so I'm assuming they can squeeze through a bit smaller. Saw a common rat go under a door space of about an inch at full throttle.

Red fox can slip through a pretty small opening. This one passed right through a woven wire fence without breaking stride. I believe the openings are 4 inches high by 6 inches wide.

Interesting...I just had a friend show me a nice big red fox that he caught in a rabbit snare that was set with an opening that was not much bigger than a large orange and he said it was only set about 2 or 3 inches off the surface of the rabbit trail.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

A fox can get thru a 2 1\2inch diameter hole. That is the width of their head.

I have caught a handful of fox in 160s set for coon over the years. You could tell each one of them was trying to leap right through the trap. I have heard of them being killed in 120s, I haven't ever seen it but I did see a 120 kill a 25# bobcat in a marten set before so I am sure it is possible.

A red fox squeezed through about a 3 inch hole, it chewed through a chickenwire door, on one of my friends pens. If we had not seen it we would not of thought it was possible.

Thanks a ton. I trap around hog wire exactly like that and I've wondered the same thing. Thanks for the proof. I was amazed.

I snared a red in a crawl under on a woven wire fence back in December. By the time I got there he had gone back and forth through the squares until he literally was incapable of moving. The squares were about the size of the ones in the picture trapper Ron posted.

I agree that if a fox can get its head through, it can crawl through. Just measured 40 red fox skulls, only 3 of which were in excess of 3" in width. Grey foxes, all about 2.5" wide. Therefore, I suspect that most red foxes would have little trouble squeezing through a 3 x 3" fence. And yes, as others have said, I've caught them in 120 Conibears periodically (marten sets).

Jack
