I have heard that rats for example can fit through tiny cracks a fraction the size of their bodies.... I seen a red fox at the top of my garden on Saturday night (I was out checking the traps) and he slipped through the hedge. I inspected the hedge for holes and could not see any big ones... I have the main ones covered with traps...anyway I had to install some make shift fencing yesterday to block off that entry / exit route. Hopefully I'll catch him next time. Fox number 30 (a milestone) is proving a bit ellusive at the moment....that said its only Wednesday...I normally catch them on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night...my theory on that being...the rubbish is collected in the neighborhood on those mornings.
Regards

As a rule of thumb, about any wild animal can get through a hole that it's head can fit through. That is pretty universaal, but does not apply to humans, and I have my doubts about the apes. If he can get past his eyes he`s through , I have seen Grey`s go through a hole the size of a average man`s fist .

Interesting...I just had a friend show me a nice big red fox that he caught in a rabbit snare that was set with an opening that was not much bigger than a large orange and he said it was only set about 2 or 3 inches off the surface of the rabbit trail.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

A fox can get thru a 2 1\2inch diameter hole. That is the width of their head.

I agree that if a fox can get its head through, it can crawl through. Just measured 40 red fox skulls, only 3 of which were in excess of 3" in width. Grey foxes, all about 2.5" wide. Therefore, I suspect that most red foxes would have little trouble squeezing through a 3 x 3" fence. And yes, as others have said, I've caught them in 120 Conibears periodically (marten sets).
