Here is a old upright freezer I use for drying seng and seal and bloodroot in. It will dry roots pretty fast and it will pretty much keep up on drying my seng as fast as I dig it. I use a 75 to 100 watt light bulb in the bottom of the freezer and close the big door to within about an inch of closing. I try to keep my temp at around 90 degrees but it can vary from 80 to up close to 100 degrees ,depending on how hot or cool it is outside. That is also how I decide on what bulb to use. in cooler weather, I use a 100 watt buld and in warmer weather a 75 watt bulb and have gotten down as low as a 60 watt bulb in real warm weather. It something you just have to play with and get to know what and when you should do something. Here is my freezer dryer.

you would be better sticking to the hardware cloth...............the chicken wire would allow for too much of the smaller stuff to fall thru.
