Just a small group of Valley farmers selling potatoes, herbs, carrots, cabbage and whatever else grows up here. I think most everybody at this market are organic. There are several other farmers markets around town. One of the vender's at 15th and Cordova is Arctic Organics. I buy a lot of veggies from them. They usually have potatoes, cabbage and carrots and such all winter long at there farm in Palmer. My favorite is Yellow Fin Potatoes. They grow several different varieties.

LOL White!!!! OMG!

And I have a question for you. Have you heard of wolves killing bears in the winter while sleeping in their den? Either here or elsewhere?

Not while in the den. I found one a few years ago though that wolves had killed in the woods. About a 2 year old brown bear.

I would find it an incredible feat to kill one in the den. I don't see how they'd get in and there is usually not much room. I would really doubt it happening.

Wolves do kill black bear in their dens here on the Kenai. Never
have saw where they tackled a brownie. A groggy black bear probably isn't much of a challenge for them, and a young brown bear may not be either, but I've never seen where they went after one.

No kidding! Is it in the spring or fall usually ? Every black bear den I've ever seen has been too small to even allow a wolf to get in. I remember the first one I ever saw. I could not figure how that bear got in inside.

A lot of black bear den up in the canyons northeast of my place,
usually just hole up under a root wad at the base of an alder or
spruce. Most don't make a very deep hole like the brown bear do. Wolves hunt those canyons off and on all winter. When they kill one they don't leave much but a few little pieces of hide and some hair. I don't know how they go about it, if they rip the throat out and stand back or just drag him out on top and team tag him or just how they do it. It's always too beat down and
cleaned up to read much sign.

That looks pretty fresh, did you scare them off the kill?

There were still using it in the evenings. It was across the river and I could stand on the bank in the evenings and watch them come out to get a drink and then head back in for some more chow.

Thats interesting. Get any guess as to how many in the pack?
Looks like that little fellow should have still been with the sow.

I think it probably was with the sow but she got away.

I would guess 3-5 in the pack, based on voices in the night.

That would have been something to watch. It would take some guts and quick feet to mess around with a mad sow like that and STILL have time to kill the cub.

Yeah I would like to have seen the confrontation. Heck even the young bear must have been a handfull.

Brain is pretty well picked over Bonnie. Speck has the supporting info. Hard to believe they can do that.

I know when the wolves were thick around here bear meat always worked best as bait.

Killing a black bear in the den some how doesn't amaze me as much as taking a cub away from a sow grizzly. A mad sow is like
*ell unleashed.
