I have had two bobcats over the past week with the hair slipping when I roll them. I had another one this morning. I caught it this morning, skinned it while it was warm. I then fleshed it and put it on the board. I put it in front of a fan and my room is 65-70*. I came back 30 min later and turned it. When I turned it, the belly hair slipped in two spots and one spot on the back. Why is this happening? I have put up 6 other cats this season with no problems. Dose anyone have any idea? Am I fleshing to much? When it slipps, it looks just like a taint, but it can't be tainted as I just skinned it. I am I not let the hair set? Thanks.

How long from the time you skinned it till you put it on the board?
Did you pack it around all rolled up all day in 70 degrees?
Did you put anything on the skin?

It is very possible you shaved it too close when fleshing. Is your fleshing knife sharp? The one I use on my cats has never been sharpened. I just push the fat off.

I shoot it at 6:30 am this morning
I started taking the hide off at 6:50 am this morning
I strated fleshing the hide at 6:57 am this morning
I put her on the board hide out at 7:02 am this morning
I rolled her at 7:35 am this morning.
She was still steaming when I pulled the hide off. I am not trying to be smart a$$ with the time, I was timing myself this morning so I would know how much time I have in the future. I have to be home at 6:45am to get the kids off to school. So I have to have a line that I can run with a flash light and be home in time. My line is 5 miles from the house and use the 4 wheeler to make a 2 mile loop.

You do not salt hides that you intend to sell. I would second the too much fleshing. There is no other reason it should slip. Sounds like your time line was more than fine.

DO not ever salt the hides if you are selling them as fur!

I went back at lunch and looked at the hide, I figure I got into the leather and cut the hair roots. I am guessing I got in to big of a hurry and it was kind of dark even with the flood lights. I will take more time on the next one. Both of the hides that slipped were caught before work and put before work. I may just start throwing them in them in cold room till I get home in the evening. Thanks gentelmen.

My buyer would shoot me if I salted a hide. When you dry them, they are ready for shippment. Salt would rust every it came in contact with during shipping and just be mess. When dried right you need no salt. All they are doing is going to the dresser to be tanned and turned into coats. They have a lot yet to do to the fur we ship out.

I read somewhere that the tannery don't like the salt because it messes with the chemistry of the tanning process but thats just a guess on my part someone in here will know.

I THINK THAT YOU ARE FLESHING TO DEEP AND CAUSING THE HAIR TO SLIP,ALL I EVER DO IS JUST GET THE FAT AND THE MEAT OFF OF THE HIDE AND THEN I WASH THEM AND PUT THEM ON THE BOARDS AND DRY THEM HIDE SIDE OUT TELL THEY ARE FAIRLY DRY THEN TURN THEM HAIR SIDE OUT AND LET THEM DRY FOR 7 TO 10 DAYS AND I NEVER HAVE ANY PROBLEMS.
JUST THE WAY I DO IT.

Try using a pocket knife and cut the blobs of fat and little chunks of meat off. I normally turn my fox and cats after 4-6 hours sometimes longer depending of the sound that is produced when I tap on them with my fingernails.
