if it was actually dry that would be one thing, however as you know Jeff, when it's dry, only the law abiding citizens don't drink. The ones who abuse it will do so no matter what. They just pay a lot more for it, and someone makes a lot more on it. The sad thing is, everyone in every village knows who the bootleggers are, but nothing is ever done.

yes..he is fine now..two stents later, and he is chain smoking as good as new smile
and yes fish...we have lazy burned out cops...so nothing realy gets done but reactinary measures..and its sad (as you well know) that its the kids that end up paying the highest price....I imagine the only reason it failed is because, all the drinkers are convicted felons and cant vote laugh

I remember hard stuff easy to get in St. Mary's when I was there. Guys would get done with a King opening, get paid, and a few would go on a bender for about three or four days with friends. I was amazed people could drink like that. Then, back up and out for the next opening. It truely was sad for the kids. They were pretty much abandoned during that time. Very ugly sometimes too. Unfortunately, some folks just can't have booze and the rest pay the price for it. I am OK with dry towns, but sure which they would nail the bootleggers like fish said. Everyone knew who they were, it was just catching them with the booze that seemd to keep the VPSO's at bay.

That summer, I didn't get a drink for three months. When I finally got a warm Budwiser when I got to a damp community, it was probably the best beer I had ever had... smile

Well TJ its alot easyer to get there now thats for sure,in fact most of our imported Booze, comes from Saint Marys these days...they order in,and make a 20 mile ride down and resale it and make a huge profit,....our dry status is like pissing in the wind,...while that is going on.

Jeff,

That sucks, and it is pretty much impossible to stop either I bet. It was dry when I was there, but you wouldn't know it by the way things were going on after an opening and folks had gotten paid.

If that is the case, might be a good choice for MV to go with a damp deal and the go like Barrow and have an import station, charge a tax on everything coming in, and try and monitor and control what does come in. Those that have issues, lose there import license. It will make it a bit harder for the boot leggers to make a profit, and at least bring in money for MV to use for a counciling and detox center at least. Could even provide funds for education in the schools about it.

you hit the nail on the head...Thats the only way I see it working myself,..and the best case cenerio..I would take it one step further and have the city put in a Brass Buckle type establishment..and could keep an eye on them, at all times..have the detox and jail right next door smile
we dont have the big fishing bucks anymore like when you were here...so many now make home brew, and get tanked on that..they bootleg it for $50 a gl.....nasty stuff.

That's the whole town !

There are two bars and a package store. There are the occassional drunks but they pretty much stay out of people's way. The cost can be too high.

I have no tolerance for drunks, and a lot of the town feels the same way.

What I would like to see, and you guys touched on it earlier, is for the town or village government to own the license. The town should reap any financial reward from selling booze since the town has to pay all the costs associated with the drunks. I normally would be opposed to that competition with private enterprise but booze related problems affect everyone in the community.

Yeah we have 2 troopers but serious problems are not common even when they are both out of town. The community just will not put up with it. An obnoxious drunk is likely to get the snot kicked out of him.

Downriver from here the situation is as you describe.
