Well, I've only been hunting in Alaska since '83, so I don't have the experience some others here do, but I still prefer my .338 for quite a bit of my big game hunting, though I have a 7mm that sees use, and the old .243 is my favorite gun for our Sitka blacktails. Just depends on weather I am hunting Admiralty/Chichigof, or other places less frequented by growlers.

Just doing what I want now.

Now , faced with a charging Bear in Alaska , my 30-30 would not be the first caliber to choose, but it could certainly do good enough. especially since your 338 fell apart!

keep talking you might convince yourself but probably nobody else...and don't forget your canoe

my .338 is my gun that I use for pretty much everything. However am getting a 30-30 for 'fun hunting'. Something about lever action guns that are cool.

Why not get a 45-70 in a lever gun or something along those lines?

I have nothing clever to put here.

Lever guns can be a real problem in the winter. I've seen several actions freeze tight and the lever does not provide enough "leverage" to open it.

Have a Browning .450 BLR.

When I plinked my wolves, the firing pin froze. First when click and nothing, then jacked another round and it went bang.

Unlike W17 i'm not a sissy and don't have twigs for arms, so I just use the lever as normal and find no issues.

Alaskan, I had the same thing happen with a BLR in .308. Of course it was one of the largest bucks I've had the privilege to draw down on.
Gun was traded the next day.

That can be expected on most guns that haven't been cleaned of all the factory oil (dont' know if yours was or not) and dealing with freezing conditions. Glad it only took one action to get everything working again. However, the hebe in me kind of hurt to see an unfired $5/shell fall into the snow....

$5.00 for ONE .450 Marlin round ?? Have you tried ordering from the Sportsmansguide ? Even with shipping, the price is less.

Yes, I know, but have you read the article in the ADN about the road to Nome ?

I dont think that helps CB. It would then be $27,000,000,005 for a .450 round, lol.

If they built a road to Nome, Alaskan would be employed for life just on that one project!

I say we build a road to Mc G.
then follow the Kuskokwim to Bethel.
that would be a good route for a road.
