AK: I'm for effective help that will provide long term results for the area. You can interpet that any way you like. I'll bow to anyone who has seen the local numbers and can get an emergency opener to deal with it.
OT: What happened to Whenn Air? Can't believe it. Dillingham or Anchorage to the Gash for <$600? AKN to UGA $302? Must be a PFD deal as they were higher than that this summer.

You're getting your own shot at a cost free "emergency opener".
I'm just saying it's kind of weird a person wants the numbers reduced, is propositioned a way to do it, and then doesn't want it.....

Not looking to get anybody's dander up here, but considering the human kind of neighbors, a bunch of terrorist bears are prolly easier to get along with in the long run...

Maybe we could auction off a trip for another forum member from Louisiana to film the adventure. That would help reduce over-all costs.
Do I bid here, or are you going to open a new thread??

UB- We pay our airfare.
We pay for our food, and can bring lodging.
We'd pay for any gas for "showing us the ropes".
Shoot, we could probably bring groceries that you might need (can fit a lot in a charter), and you'd get our left over food/supplies.
Is this a long term solution: nope. But it's a start. Every little bit counts, and this would be you "doing your part".
Now, I realize this is your slice of heaven, and I can understand not wanting a bunch of "internet friends" showing up... But, it is a start to a solution.

DR: I've also been told the most effective bear call now is the moose cow or calf sound. If that doesn't call for Amy Sue, I don't know what does. -TJ

DR: This can't be the first unit to have a brown bear population get out of control. Has anything effective been done in the past to deal with it? Yes but John Graybill is no longer with us.

He surely would have known what to do...
I am awaiting some sudden increases in K9 populations in areas in the near future...that had realatively stable or declining numbers....
Global warming is going to have a big effect in population growth I think.

AK Good offer assuming it is within the legal framework. We have all enjoyed playing the save UB from the evil bears thing but I have to brutally honest about your offer in a way I am sure you will understand. Having seen just a small portion of the population when they are concentrated I'm not sure hunting is the answer because of the sheer numbers of bears. For hunting to be the answer I think it would require so many hunters that mumbers would become expotential. I say a small portion because when you see large numbers of bears from the air in heavily brushed streams there are a lot more than what you see. The next issue is the totally out of wack sow/cub to boar ratio. You will just have to take my word on this as I have seen mostly sows and cubs. Selecting just sows is not an easy thing to do but to an experienced hunter or guide it is doable. Put that piece in the maybe column. Now look at the impact of a half dozen or more people on area like we are blessed to live in. First of all this area is not mine and I do not control acces but I will try to preserve what we have here untill its body bag time. The entire experience out here is about how many people are brought into the area. We have spent most of our life out here and almost all our money trying to maintain the experience out here by limiting the access of our own family and friends. You would have fingers and toes left over if you counted the number of people I have brought in here over the years. I doubt if anyone else within a 100 miles of here could say that. Take that fact and add a questionable long term impact in bear reduction and you get my point. Now lets assume I become convinced that loading the place up with hunters is the answer. Who should I invite? The family members and friends who I know will not abuse the privilege or my internet buddies? Anyone who has hunted/fished here or anywhere else doesn't need and explantion. So in summary let me say I question the impact of even selective hunting and if I change my mind I have a long list of people with head of the line priviliges. I appreciate the offer but hope you understand. I appreciate your candid response. I am however going to highlight a few segments and respond: 1.) Thank you for being brutally honest in a way I can understand. English is my second language. Or maybe on the internet we missed your sarcasm of "needing the numbers reduced". That can happen on these forums. Apparently you meant you'd like them to magically be reduced, and for someone else to do it. 2.) Hunting is the most viable answer. Seeing as a sow can have 2 cubs (we'll use the small number for arguments sake), well knock 4 or 5 down and the next year there will be 15 less bears. Throw in the sows with cubs and the increased attention on their cubs by boars(since there are 15 fewer bears, and a bigger decrease in numbers occurs). A few years of that, and the numbers slowly get reduced and your moose population comes back. Yes, it's a slow process, but one you'd have a hand in, and that's what it takes: effort from people that want the resource (moose) to be positively effected. 3.) I can understand you wanting to maintain the "status quo" of being there. That is why you live there and continue to choose to do so. 4.) while the impact on long term populations aren't a "for sure", it is a start. Every little bit counts. The pyramids did not get built overnight. 5.) If the line is long, then you shouldn't have an issue of sustaining a long term answer that you're in search of. And lastly: I'd suggest, like I do most people that complain of their "issues", that they do something about it. Like you said, you have a long list of people that would love the opportunity and would help your "cause". Use that list, do your part. It may not be the long term answer, but it is a start. You yourself have said you've limited the access of family and friends. Maybe you'll show people the beauty of the place, and they can (as I'd assume most on this site would) respect your rules and the land. You have a choice to make a difference, and I can see you've made your choice...have your beef flown in and hope "somebody else" fixes the problem.

Well, guess I'm gonna ruffle some feathers here. I totally understand why Bob is not willing to open his home up to a bunch of self invited internet aquaintences, and I think you guys have no business harrassing him over it. No feathers ruffled. I don't blame him either. I do disagree with you though, as I don't consider it harassing him about it. He openly stated he wanted the numbers reduced. And now has openly stated that he could help with that but chooses not to (family and friends, not just "self invited internet aquaintences"). Hard to complain listen to someone complain when they do nothing to help their situation when they can.

Spek,
No ruffled feathers here. I can fully understand that as well. For all he knows we all could be living at Spring Creek doing our time. Doesn't know any of us from Adam, for sure.
