Bob do you take a boar every 4 years? Does anyone come there and hunt them?

Most of bears taken in this area are near the villages or guide camps. I assume the guides take mostly big boars but I think that just compounds the problem because I've seen them be an excellent birth control device.
I try to take just a bear every four years but that is also compounded by the every other year thing. The bear population is so out of wack I really don't think hunting is the answer. However the every other year every four year restriction in this unit is just plain wrong.

Bob, think of the thinning that could be done by a group of 4-6 guys. And i'm guessing size wouldn't matter.

Think about it....

I have thought about it a lot. Even six guys assembled around the every other year every four year thing that by some magic only took sows wouldn't make a dent that couldn't be filled by a couple litters next spring. Have seen several three and four cub litters which is an indication of overabundance. You have to travel this area and look at the concentrations then you would understand it. Its like Katmai or McNiel river when they are concentrated on the salmon streams. Every year it is getting worse.
Size does matter when you are paying 22k and the usual target is the big boar who is one of the few population control devices we have.

I can see it now our own little Tman get together , Alaskan Style killing bears catching a few fish. I just checked with Pen Air it will cost me $534 to get to Ugashik $302 RT from King Salmon to there, then we will have to have Bob pick us up and skiff us to the base camp smile Oh ya they only fly in there 2 days a week so we need to plan and extended hunt/party!! I can see it now a group photo like you see of some of those moose and caribou camps only our will be of bears hanging from Bob's deck smile

Management priorities for sure. The peninsula arguably used to be the best big moose hunt in AK (world?) back in the day when moose were considered good and bears not so good. What a turnaround. Brown bear are definitely the predominant life-form most places out there now. And if you do find a moose to shoot it's not like Kodiak deer where you can carry out all the meat at once!

We can kill all Sows....
which will certainly slow the exponential growth.
Less sows, less cubs, means the boars kill more of the other cubs.

Would at least put a dent in the growth, not nessecarily the over all current population.

I would have no problem shooting a decent sow if she was alone. Otterman has just been designated trip planner.

I think it would be a heck of a get together and a good time (really, i'm not that wild of a person). Good fun for a week and then we'd be gone. Help you get some work done around the place and relieve some pressure.

Size matters to people paying $22k a hunt. For us, it wouldn't.

Yeah, it probably isn't a "huge" dent in the population, but every little bit counts.

I'lm sure that we could pay for the gas for the ferrying back and forth too.

Camp expenses would be nil since Bob has room for all of us. Wouldn't need to pack much gear and no food.

Maybe we could auction off a trip for another forum member from Louisiana to film the adventure. That would help reduce over-all costs.

And White is the "Marketing/Advertising" rep. The knowledge and past experience lend themselves nicely!

Wolfwoman - Do you think that grizzly coat will be available for this expedition if needed?

There seems to be some confusion here. The gutpile and run crowd are a dime a dozen. Locally they are referred to as skimmers. They come in and skim the fish and game and split. Granted this crowd is more jaded than most but what I'm looking for is a caretaker that will pay me well for the privelige of being one with mother nature.
I'm sure several of you think a quick gang bang of sows would do the trick. BTW they usually don't stand up and raise there legs when you hollar "show me your t***". My challange is to fly just a couple of the small drainages near here after the salmon run next year then tell me a pile of dead sows would make a real difference.

Help is help right? But the next statement means maybe thinning them isn't what you REALLY want...

No problem, just need more guns. UB's Bears, Bed and Breakfast. Buy a jet boat with a heated cabin (for more delicate visitors) and gun ports and get busy!
