anyone have any quotes on dried ginseng???

any ideas on prices?

Have been offered $400 a lb dry.....Think I will hold out

local buyer offering $340, know i'm goning to wait

Yep 350 here is the best I was quoted!!!!!I think this is going to be a short season for alot of diggers with it being dry this summer.....

i def won't sell for that.......it's pretty dang scarce here...........walked my rear off and only have 1/2 pound dry.................not good.

Weibke has been wanting green over dry here. $200 a pound wet for 20 yrs or older or 2 0z. or over roots. $145 for regular root wet. Tough year here though. A lot went down during the summer heat wave, and whats left is going down pretty quick now.

I just want to say something. Don is an incredible buyer and an awesome resource to us! WOW! He really brought light to the green ginseng. DAMMIT I just sold a couple pounds from over the weekend! ERRR To Weibke. And like Don said The weibke are an incredible group of people. VERY FAIR! They bring alot to the trapping and ginsenging!

Back in the early 70s sold lots of sang for 50 cents an ounce.Needed money for dates and beer!

People listen to Don he is giving some very useful information from a buyers perspective to benefit a seller!

if they are wanting your seng green you might want to weigh green and see how it drys cause thats the only way they want green is if they are coming out ahead imo, mine is about 2 to 1. been there done that

Kentucky doesn't normally get the regular rain fall IA has and our bigger roots take 3-3.5 lbs to make 1 dry. For many years I dried my 'seng and very seldom does less than 3 lbs equal 1 dry here. The IA DNR uses a 3.5 lbs wet/1 dry. It matters not how one chooses to sell, just like fur. If I were to dry my IA root I would lose money.

Dangit Dave, I darn sure did not say you was a fool. I have more respect for you that that. I would never say anybody on this site is a fool or ignorant. If I remember correct , when I wrote my post on the drying weight of seng, I never mentioned you or did I say directly to you [Dave you dang fool, why did you sell your roots green} Matter of fact, I didn't mention a single persons name. You will notice that I deleted my post. I will think long and hard before I give any kind of good info about how to make extra money on your roots. I personally don't give a big rats rear end how you sell your roots.

Oh one other thing about last years prices, I paid 700 a lb on seng for a while. You know really it is not good for my bussiness to offer advise on how to sell your goods. I cut my own throat when giving good solid info to digger.

Wow...did i miss something here...lol....Ginseng root will dry alot of different weights...root growing in clay or in loomy soil will weigh different.I can make roots weigh alot more just by adding lime dust to the soil.Time of year makes a difference, size of the rrot makes a difference.

I too value some of Don's advice, but suggesting in a post he deleted that selling green root is a mistake, that is not necessarily good advice IMO.

Dave let me say this and I don't want you to take it wrong. Personally I like to get top dollar on everything I sell. I put a lot of effort into buying and digging or catching and preparing my product. The point I make is this. Why sell your seng green when you can most usually hold onto it fot a couple months and make more money for it. I agree the price Jason is paying at 200 a lb. on the 20 year old roots is a great price. But, I personally want more for that particular root. I want that root mixed into my poorer grade root to bring me a good price when the market gets to poping. I have never sold select root by itself, but if I did, I would have to have no less than a thousand a pound for it dry.
The reason for that is to make sure that all my 75.00 and 100 dollar root has a buyer. I sell a mixed bag of roots for x amt. of dollars each year. If I sold all my select root, I would very soon have a lot of very angry buyers looking at my second quality root and telling me they will offer me 200 a lb. less than my good mixed lots with my select roots still mixed into the lot of roots.
I won't try to buy a persons roots that have all the select root gone from the batch. Nobody wants to buy inferior small or young roots without having a good base to the roots bag.
Dave if this works for you, then by all means do it. But looks to me like if you dig a sizeable amt. of seng each season, and, I suspect you do, you would want top price for your goods.
At this time of the year, nobody knows what top price for seng might be. Most of the if not all of the export license have not been issued as of this time as a general rule. The Chinese hardly ever give info about what they might be willing to pay untill they get a good idea on how much seng might be in the country or just how much their competition is paying.
Dave sorry I ruffeled your feathers and never make the mistake that I might think your a fool,. Unless I am getting the wrong info, you must be quite a top notch trapper and Ginseng digger. So a old man such as myself, would never try to pull the wool over your eyes. Your much to smart for that trick. Dave I hope you have a great seng digging season and a super trapping season.

Don, I enjoy reading your posts regarding roots and herbs and have the utmost respect for your knowledge. In my area most of the soil is a sandy loam. Roots tend to be quite heavy with water and don't dry down well. Trust me, for many years I dried most of my root and once in a great while I would have a batch dry out under 2 lbs. wet but that is very seldom. Most times its 3lbs-4lbs wet to 1 lb dry. Sure the amount of rain fall and soil type play a role, but these weight conversions are about the average for root here. I've watched markets rise, and fall as the season goes on so I finally decided for me that selling wet on a weekly basis averaged out to what most received for dry root later on. I don't worry about mixing in my select with the poor because I'm careful not to dig anything 10 yrs old or less. I've never dug root in KY. IN, or OH so maybe your type roots dry down much better than here.

I've always sold dry.Although it seems like wet root does better than it once did in looking at the prices guys received the last few years.I find roots dry down less in weight later in the season.

Ive always sold dry it just tradition but these new wet prices keep going up makes me wonder? Any dry price updates last year I got 675. dry

Fellas be real carefull sittin on that seng. Ifin ya break all the necks off it, ya might have somebody gripe about it. I bought some yesterday that looks like a fella sat on it to hard. Matter of fact, he told me that it got crushed a little.

Weibkes jumped their wet price up to $170-$200 for run of the mill root.

One thing I've never understood is they want all the little fine root tips attached yet once dry these hair roots break and fall off any way.

well ill have to sell seng juice then. lol
