W17 I have a magnum horse fence controller that is good for 30 miles of fence and I run <500 feet. I've watched it lite up a couple growlers and the only thing I touch it with is a fence tester. Really wet grass after a fresh rain and a wet nose makes for no repeat offenders. They also make some very strange noises when they get lit up. Sorry but didn't read your post correctly the first time. I thought you asked if I ever touched the fence. No the growler in the photo didn't touch it. He is one of the few that even come back after they get lit up. You can tell the ones that have "ridden the wire" because they will come no closer than about 6" to the fence. I've always suspected there is some harmonics in the wire they sense when it's hot. I've watched a couple "ride the wire" and they really shift gears from that slow rolly polly gait of there's to barely subsonic in no time.

How much did that setup cost you Bob? Definently well worth it no matter what it was I imagine.

I think with 60 poles, attachement thingy's, wire, gates, controller and most importantly the 5/8" 8' copper ground rods is was around $500 with shipping. Probably do it cheaper down south.

UB how long do you run your fence?

I have heard that when the bear gets mad - he just rips up or knocks the posts over/out. The fence then becomes worthless. Anyone have this happen ?

The person who mentioned the above - said the fence is a false sense of security. Especially if you are in a tent.

we've been freezing pretty hard every night now for at least a week. River is dropping quickly. Some light snow on Takotna mountain. Supposed to turn white here tonight.

Run the fence another week to 10 days till they overgraze the pasture and eat all the dead salmon and leave.

PN:
Not been my experience. Whenever I've seen them lit up they only want to do one thing at that is to get as far away as they can. When I first set it up I set it to high and I think a small bear got his head under it and when he was lit up he raised is head and drug the fence off with him. Never came back. I'm a believer. I have regular trails avoiding the fence.

Great photos! Love it!

I have had the same experience as UB. Used a similar setup but with 2 strands; higher strand at about 24-28 inches. This was around the meat shack at Pete Shepherd's place on the Hoho. The brown bears wore a trail in the gravel 6 or 8 inches deep about 18" outside the wire as they dreamed and drooled over the moose meat within.

It seemed to me that after the first time they put their cold, wet noses on the wire, they did not touch it again.

Judging from the noises at night, they were some very frustrated bears!

Pete

I got a pretty sweet hunting story for you all but my second oldest daughter, not to be outdone by her older siblings took the simm card home with her after her 4 day hunt this last week. Your all going to have to wait for me to get my hand on some picts before I spill the beans. ;0)

Hapiness is an electric fence

These are some great pics!! How far were you from the bear when you took the pictures?

I just used my laser range finder because it turns out further than I would of guessed. I would of guessed 50 feet but it was actually 78 feet.

I like to take pictures and I have taken some decent ones in the past. I have to say though, electric fence or not I am not sure I could have held the camera very still for that shot!

Were you standing in the open for that picture or were you hidden in any way?
