There was a post about snaring beavers here not too long ago. I asked about setting a beaver snare on a drowner. Possum skinner and some others said it can be done, wich have no doubt that it can and that is works. Ive been working this through in my head and I cant come up with a logical set up. I have trapped beavers with 330s, #5 dls and coil springs. I have set up snares a couple times in runs with the cable wired off in deep water near an entaglement and been successful in drowning that way, but can you set up a snare on a slide wire or pole type set up? In Newts Master Beaver Snaring video he shows a set with a snare on a drowning cable too.

I have had some success using a wire hook on the end of the drowner to catch the snare. Try putting a stop above the weight on the drowner to shorten the snare before it finds the hook.

If I were to do it this would be how, however I stay out of the water whenever possible. lol

OK I follow the snare set up, I use snares on my coyote and cat line. The problem Im having getting my tiny brain around this is: When a critter hits a snare the snare closes, hoepfully quickly, now when the snare pops off the wammy and support pole the critter continues to move ahead, or maybe even sucks back. The snare is now on the animial and by the snare being anchored solid when the critter continues to move the cable comes tight and the loop is sucked down secure enough that their will be very little chance of escape. The problem Im having in figuring this out is: when the beaver hits the loop it comes closed, mostly, now the beaver continues down the slide and the snare on a drowning wire continures with it. Now if the beaver feels this length of cable dragging along in the water why not just back outa the snare, the cable will give a little being on a drowner and maybe afford enough slack for the beaver to escape. Is this even a legitimate concern, is my thinking way off, would the beaver dive out or instinct - hit the end of the slide then the end of the snare and suck everything tight? Am I making any sense at all, did I forget my medication today, I think I might go and commit myself. wew .... lol. Im probably over analyzing.

Ive done it, and it works but seems usually a tangled mess at end of drowner. I think a drowning rod would be much more user friendly when retreiving your catch. Possibly a long extension instead of drowner, with a fair sized weight close to short snare would have some merit also.

That is the only way I snare beaver. I use a drowning rod that is 8 ft. long and 3/8 in dia. I use 42 in snares so I can keep the beaver underwater easy. I snare 50-60 beaver a season on drowner rods. I never have any problem with beaver backing out of them nor do I have trouble with them slipping the cable. A good snared drowned beaver shows very little snare mark. Try It , you will like it. Cables also work good for drowners, that is what I used before I used rods. It just takes more time to anchor the cable on both ends.

I make my rods. I flatten one end of them, put a piece of angle iron on for a slide and weld a big washer with ay least a 1/2 in hole in the center of it to the end I stake to the bank. I then poke the flattened end into the creek or lake bottom about a ft. dp. into the mud, making sure I get it into the mud good, then just bribg the other end down to the bank and drive my stake through the hole in the washer. Very easy and very fast.

Matter of fact that whole drawing would be a drawing of the setup that takes 95% of mt beaver. I hardly ever look for a natural set for beaver. All I do is use some of my beaver lure I make and put that set in where I think beaver are going to travel. That is a perfect set for beaver in this area. Sometimes I might string 3-4 setd like this down a bank or 2 within easy walking distance of the truck. The next day I have beaver, if they ran. I will upon occassion use a no 5 or a 330 ifin the situation calls for it, but for the most part, that is what my beaver trappin consist of.

yep, rods are the way to go when it comes to snares on drowners or foot trap that matter ... but like others said cable works to ... used it for years before the rods and still do at times if need be

the rods i make are 1/4" round 6 & 8 foot long ... i just bend loops on each end and weld them shut ... usually staked at each end or used with a heavy drowner weight on the deep water end ... i also make heavy duty drowner locks for the rods

i'll try to get some photos of what i'm talking about ... but for now here's a foot trap set up on one of my rods ... same set up with a snare ...

I thought about setting up a river line with snares on drowners.The above posts are great but I thought of a way to make it better.Add another drowning lock to the snare between the drowning lock on the cable and the snare lock,attach a window weight or other weight to this drowner.Make the set with the weight next to the set.When the beaver gets into the snare it goes for deep water,the weight slides with the beaver and travels towards the closed loop,helping the beaver drown quickly.Never did it just thought of it.Seemed like alot of work.
