I see the canned pink salmon on the shelves here for like $13 bucks a can..no one buys it of course.

our fresh frozen fall Chum fillets retail for $16.95 lb we get a buck a lb at the dock..talk about getting hosed...lol
this is what the meat looks like...not your typical pale looking chum.

It's a petition pushing for an investigation into halibut and salmon bycatch by trawlers.

That is one darn good looking chum Jeff. Be safe out there!

AKScott that chum was 70 miles inland when caught.

And Thanks AKnative, but about your petition...we have been been going through low numbers of Kings here for 10 years,we were quick to blame the trawl fleet as well, the ironic part is that we own part of the trawl fleet through our CDQ in fact the whole west coast of villages is part owner most own catcher /prosser boats.

and since we own and run many of the boats I personaly know guys that work on them, they say very very few kings or other fish come through the ship it seams they pretty much just scoop through polluk schools.

there also are fish and game observers onboard that count bicatch and I have looked at the numbers they put out and it is very low bicatch of salmon.

I am not saying it couldnt be happing on other boats but the ones they monitor it dont.

if I were to blame anyone I would say its the illeagle fishing in the Bering sea by the foriegn fleet (remember the rat boat) that rapes our waters without prossecution and have learned to target juvinial salmon and other species.

if we patrolled our waters better it might help but they can fish them anywhere on the high seas past our 200 mile limit
but I think a step forward would be protectiing our own water, seams its kind of like the Mexican border we dont patrol and wonder where our jobs are going..lol

Just finished eating my one King. ( I did keep a Jack in May ) Next year I hope to eat another one. I remember when we could keep one a day for two months. frown Probably never took more than 10 though, including jacks.

They cut our season limit on kings the other day we can now only take 2 for the season effective July 28 from the Nushagak. I remember when it was 5 a day limit and getting 5 was no problem in addition the commercial guys had a full blown king season frown

Sockeye run started early but is slowing down now. With the weather we have been having would of never guessed an early start. Kings are non existent.

I think Aknative is talking about the draggers not the factory trawlers

I wonder if they will restrict the comercial and subsistance nets across the state for Kings to 7 1/2 inch gear like they did here on the Yukon.

Kings run here was a bust, too. Even the hatchery fish are mostly a no-show.

Just doing what I want now.

well I am impressed you all self imposed net restrictions, or just cant find the 8'' gear?, I noticed with 7.5 we get about half Chums instead of kings, I can imagine 7.25 would get mostly big reds and jack kings.
if you cant find it call FnG they still use 8.5" for the test nets they know what gear to use to catch big Kings..lol

Jeff our Kings usually run just ahead of the Dogs so no problem getting too many of them in the mix most of the time and I was wrong I fished 8 inch gear this year I have both 7.5 and 8 in the shed. I agree the 7.25 would get a lot more smaller fish but the 8.5 would miss a lot of 18-22 pounders and that is the majority of them here anymore

I see..here they run with the chums,so if we ever get a king opening we will be picking chums half the time.

when we could use any type gear I liked 8 and 1/8th it did pretty good on the big kings and even the smaller 15-20 lbers

on a normal year here the kings would all be past by now but they are still hitting the mouth pretty good now so the run was just late is all.
