I'm trying to fly back today from a fire assignment in Idaho. Instead of Boise,Seattle, Fairbanks, unfortunately the government travel office saw fit to route me from Boise to Portland to Anchorage to Fairbanks. Supposed to land in Anchorage this evening.
Hope the breezes die down by then. I'm really not in a mood to stay overnight in Portland.
Pete

Still blowing 40 at our house with higher gusts. Wife's mini green house is in tatters on the back deck once again. May be a while before it clears out of South Central.

We are in the clear this morning... nice day. We need more rain. The Buskin River is low and so plugged up with humpies that the silvers won't come in. O2 level is so far down that the fish are suffocating. We got close to an inch over the weekend but need a few more pdq!

Rendering bear fat question...got a blackie on our river that had been eating some fish, tastes good , but rendered fat seems a bit darker and stronger smell, not bad though, than my spring bear... Just not as clear as my spring bear...normal? Also do you eat the cracklings, ideas?
Oh messed up first batchby putting stringy fat and left some meat on fat...is this good to treat a $220 pair of danner boots or bad idea?

I made sausage out of the meat. I was the only one in the family that could gag it down. After a while even I couldn't eat it.

My bear meat is Ok, even cut into steaks...it's not as sweet as a berry bear, but pretty good...just the rendered fat from my spring bear seems clearer and more of a neutral odor.. I did inherit some pigs last year that were fish feed for months, then my buddy and I feed them out three weeks with all the grain/protein they could eat and had to butcher them after 3 weeks since we both were leaving for training...We gagged on most of it...ground into moose sausage, it was not bad, but, the fish smell came out worse in the back strap, fatty ribs, etc...sooo, for the record, it takes at least 5 weeks of grain feeding to knock out the taste...
I'll make some bread this evening with the fat, it smells like regular crisco, but not the spring fat for sure...

Be sure to tell the guys that eat head cheese and hot dogs that they are nasty too...pretty much the same thing that goes into them I couldn't agree more. When I came out to western AK 30 yrs ago I tried everything, it was either that or go hungry in some cases. I found that most of it was good when properly prepared. I seldom eat beef, pork, or chicken anymore beef generally taste bad even what most would call a good steak.

Scrapple, tripe, chitlins...
Yep, I'd rather have a bowl of Jeff's famous goose grin soup!
