If anyone that has taken trapping instruction from Mr. Waddell and would like to share any thoughts of the experience I would love to hear from you. Those that would rather private mail me, that would be super. I don't know much about this gentleman but have heard he is an outstanding trapper. I know he offers up references if you ask for them, but thought I would ask.

 Thanks
 Mac

I took instructions from 3 back in the 80s. shortened my learning curve big time. Took all the BS out of the equation, then I learned from the animals and adapted from there. I was totally convinced there must be some secret set and magic in a bottle. My instructer told me its all location and work, no magic to that..

I have yet to see someone using 20 different lures putting up 20 times more fur. | | |

This is so funny Gary and very similar to my own experience. I also thought I was the only person without the "magic" lure/set, I have taken instruction twice and also attended minktoberfest this past year, the one simialarity from all thee above, if you want to succeed and catch a lot of fur, you have to bust your hump. That is the secret. Hard work. And like so many here who have posted, instruction was the best money I ever spent, took decades off my learning curve. No regrets.

Work ethics are In second place when It comes to large catches. It's all about the numbers game that gets you those large catches.
I could Invite my friend Mr. Brown to my neck of the woods and even with his expertise and exceptional work ethics he wouldn't catch 10 fox In week or maybe a month. It's all about the numbers when It comes to those large catches.

Back In the 80s I may have caught a few coyotes around here. But when I went to MS I became over night success as to catching coyotes. I didn't change any thing as to sets lure or locations. But Instead of having no coyotes Or 1 coyote investigating my sets I might have had 5 or 6 coyotes investigating those sets. It was the same with cats. WE had NO cats at home but In MS I caught 48 cats In one month. Was I some hot shot cat trapper ,nope I was just into a huge cat population and I couldn't help but catch them.
I could take a Rat trapper from Pa and take him to ND and he would become a high numbers rat trapper that very day. That Is If there were rats.
These high numbers guys impress me with their hard work and knowledge. But I know the common denominator Is a large population base that gets them those high numbers.

ive often wondered how many good trappers doubt them selves just because they do not have the sheer numbers as others. Now im not saying instructions are a waste! Because I firmly believe any one willing to do better should take every step they can to achieve it. Heck I would love to spend a week with wayne and andy but im just a poor redneck!Money talks and we all know what walks

At any given day there is usually enough information flying around in this place. To help most anyone that's willing to pay attention. And has the drive to put it to the test! A strong will to succeed is a factor that helps! I know a few mediocre trappers with the drive of a race horse! and they continually do well.but I have to agree 5-6 visits per trap a night is bound to put your over all numbers up there!

Every instructor provides one thing, and that is confidence, but you need something besides location, location, location, as that is what trapping is, with hard work, good equipment and lures which animals will respond to. That thing is something which is mentioned in combat in it just seems some guys have a sense in knowing where the enemy is and not getting others killed. My brother has a knack for finding game, whether hunting, fishing or trapping. That is how you put up big numbers in the longliners read country and find the pockets of fur. I remember Ray Milligan once saying that he took in a huge catch in New Mexico before a storm front, but that he preferred his 'three coyotes a day'. In the 80's it was 150 miles a day, 100 traps, 3 minutes to a set, and 12 hours later you were in your sleeping bag after Dinty Moore. Rotating 10 to 20 percent of the traps out in shifting the line to new ground is why it is a young man's game. Set a goal of 3 animals a day and in a month you will have 100 animals for a big catch after a great deal of work.
Just understand no matter who you pick for your instruction, that you will be conditioned that trapper's methods and you will always reflect that teacher. I remember watching Carrol Black. I think Johnny Thorpe influenced him. Mr. Black was an artist in making sets. They were as perfect as a Martha Stewart cake. He put up numbers with his creations, but so do people whose sets that look like disasters.
Last point, in you have to do the numbers too, the fur price. Would it make more sense to catch 5 15 dollar coyotes or 2 50 dollar coyotes? It is like when Wayne Negus wintered in Arizona and was catching 500 dollar cats in their high prices. He was setting on quality fur and the numbers to make retirement pay.
 Hope some of that helps.

star flakes, well put sir on all points. Blackie took instructions from Thorpe a few years before I took instructions from Blackie. His sets where works of art, he stressed the importance of natural looking sets and Location, location, location. Confidence and the best equipment were stressed also. Best money I've invested in my trapping knowledge.
His instructions cut my learning curve big time. I feel blessed to have known him.. I sure miss him

 Pick your instructor wisely!

And Robert won that NM coyote trapping competition 4 years In a row. And He was trapping against some pretty good competition.
Then of coarse there are the students that just don't get It. Same as kids spending 12 years In school and come out about as dumb as they were when they stared.

Instruction Isn't for everyone. So think before you leap since your laying down some serious money In most cases.

Thanks for all the responses. I honestly do not remember when I made this post originally. I think I was just curious.I am an advocate of instructions and taken some from very good trappers.
I was surprised that did a number of private mails as well.
Thanks to all that took time to answer.

A good friend said he thought he remembered me asking this question, and figured I was asking again. He had a minute to do some looking. Found out I posted this question in 2013! LOL

Without a doubt, if one was seeking coyote trapping instruction, Robert would probibly be the best money spent around these days by far.......
If you are considering yourself to be someone of influence and importance, just try ordering someone elses dog around sometime.

Well I just talked to him awhile back and he had killed 400 head. And was way behind because of new CWD regulations.

you use to be able to pre bait and then set up the traps. But now you can't have any corn outside the trap.
