TOTF, yes everyone who uses salt has trouble with rusting traps. It's just better than froze up trap beds. RD

Okie, funny you should mention that. That actually happened just outside of Kinta, OK. up in the San Bois Mountain Range. Seems we had an ice storm and the coyote traps kept freezing up. Those coyote/red wolf crosses were bringing good money then at the "Indian trinket shops". Since I no longer "salt" my traps, I won't be pulling that trick any time soon, besides it wasn't nearly as memorable as the time I had to strip down and dive under icy water to retrieve a super blanket beaver that had wrapped up on a snag. Now that's a picture! LOL

I used table salt on mine Saturday since they froze and my bait was gone. Sunday I had two coyotes waiting for me.

Sure kills dogs!(LOL) It's a GLYCOL PRODUCT, but most have a smell to them. (Ever have a hot radiator in your car?) You can use propylene glycol the same way. It is odorless but could be cut with one third water or "clean" urine. (re-read my earlier post).

Making waxed dirt in season is not easy. I do have a system that works using a doubble boiler system. PM or e-mail me at RonMarsh@verizon.net with your postal address and I will mail you an information pack with com[lete instructions.

40 years using buckwheat hulls to keep traps from freezing isn't an accident. Too old to change that tactic at this stage of the game, besides, I don't know if the ground here will even freeze this year. Might just use rain water! : )

Ed Walker, that propylene glycol really works well. I use it in a spray bottle. First time using the stuff this year.

Temps were just above freezing and we had some thawing. Then it froze real good out (just above zero) when I pulled my traps to take a break from land trapping (not due to the temps...just due to trapping burn out). They fired no problem at all.

KYBoy here on this site gave me some good advise when I was first asking about the propylene glycol. I mix it a little bit stronger than recomended just to be on the safe side (big difference between KY and WI). I used almost a 50/50 mixture of glycol to water. A bit more water than glycol, though.

Chop out your trap bed, spray the bottom, spray the trap, add about a 1/4"-1/2" of dirt, then spray the dirt down real well, add another 1/4"-1/2" or dirt, spray, ect.

The dirt you use with the propylene glycol should be just a little damp. No need for dry dirt when using it.

It's some cool stuff. Waxed dirt is even better IMO, but if a guy runs out of waxed dirt or doesn't have it to begin with: propylene glycol is the way to go.

Thanks Skunkly been trying it but have not tried a spray bottle I'am in Texas we generally don't worry about wet dirt just keeping the dry powder covering your trap! Thanks again.

Stay thirsty my friends.

Ed, I use a squirt bottle personally. I have found a spray mist bottle to "gum up" if it's too thick. That's why I use a squirt bottle. I use "clean" fox urine instead of water. 1/3 to 2/3 glycol. I use a zig-zag pattern over the trap area and lightly coat with dry dirt, just enough to take away the wet look. Probably lots of ways to do it. This is just the way I do it.

Victoria, thanks for the info I have tried a squirt bottle with the zig zag pattern with mixed results, I'am going to try the spray bottle and see if I have any better results. It is an odd year for us in west Texas when we deal with wet dirt and well below freezing weather for more than a day or two. Thanks for the info.

Stay thirsty my friends.

RV antifreeze is not the automotive type anti-freeze. It is the pink stuff you put down the pipes and drains to prevent freezing. I have never heard that this stuff was toxic to either people or dogs (in moderate doses).

Here is a link to the MSDS for the rv antifreeze.
