I'm with DaveK, Though when I lived way North of you in the "mitten" and caught badgers, you are far more likely to have a woodchuck making itself at home. These are just more situations where even a $100.00 trail camera can tell you what you have in short order so you can assess the problem and target the proper species with appropriate exclusion, device, bait, tactics....
Mtncat, we always thought the "michigan wolverines" was a funny thing when we lived there too, though one year a wolverine actually showed up in the "thumb" portion of the state. Some folks on snowmobile managed to get a good quality pic of it and it was definitely a wolverine. The synopsis of how it got into this part of the state came to this following explanation....
The wolverine was likely scooped up in a garbage truck that was bringing trash from the part of Canada that borders this area and was brought and dumped there in the state....
Now myself knowing how far and quickly wolverine roam where they do exist, I can't help but fail to picture the loud machinery and scoops picking up this fast and secretive species and then having it actually ride all the way over from Canada without exiting the vehicle before customs!

That was the honest to god version they gave of how it came over!
Anyway, NFT, I'd go get a trail cam, and let us know what you see, Michigan does have plenty of badgers, but I'd still say where you are in the state more likely a woodchuck.
