My local animal control can longer refer the public to me or any other NWCO nor can I leave cards there.

Here's the story.

A county citizen called the shelter with a squirrel issue. The director gave him the number of the two licensed NWCOs in the county, myself and my former employer as she believes in supporting local business. I don't recall talking to the man but my former employer got the job.
The issue was squirrels in the yard, not in the house mind you, and instead of walking away his technician took the job and sold the guy 2k worth of exclusion on the house.
Of course none of us are good enough to hope to satisfy a customer of this type and assure him that he will never have another squirrel in the yard. The customer got upset enough to demand a full refund and went so far as to call animal control and demand the refund from them as they were the ones who referred him to my former employer and when that didn't fly he called his county commissioner and threatened to sue the county unless he received compensation. So the official county policy now is to refer all calls to the DNR.
My former employer eventually refunded the idiot all of his money just to shut him up but knowing Steve as I do I'm more than willing to bet he cussed everyone in sight, hit his wife, suspended the tech and docked his pay for it.
Glad I didn't get the job.

BTW, the tech did exactly as he was trained to do. Take every job that calls and sell, sell, sell exclusion whether it's needed or not. His techs are not allowed to independantly turn away work.

I kow his exclusion work and if it was as I trained them to do it was limited to the house alone and the warranty covered only the house so I'm giving him the credit that the exclusion was all above board. Of the former employer himself is questionable so who knows what was done. To be as cheritable as possible the tech probably failed to gain control from the get by not backing the customer up and explaining the realities of squirrels in the yard and then letting the concept of warranty on the exclusion of the home get blurred with squirrels in the yard.
Just one of the many issues I had with that company, I was expected to train the techs to be unthinking drones that sell, sell, sell and not to think like an independant business owner.

David, I really hate stories like that. I get the feeling that the biggest jerk, by far, in this scenario, is the customer. My biggest wish is that all of our technicians could spend the time that I do, talking about what the customer's wishes are and anything else that they want to talk about.

I had a doctor's wife tell me today that our company often becomes the topic of conversation at some of their neighborhood get-togethers. Since they all live on the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, the animals really don't have any other choice but to stop right there. I'm sure many of you that are reading this have the same stopping points when you have natural barriers.

Anyway David, the fact that one jerk can ruin it for you doesn't seem quite fair since you had nothing to do with it in the first place.

Paul, I agree the customer has to be not only the biggest jerk but also idiot as well. I'm glad I'm shed of working for someone else and am independantly employed. I've grown just a might selective on just which type of client I'll take on and if I get a tingle on the warning bells I'll stop right there and make sure me and the client are both on the same planet. Otherwise they can just pound sand.

I'm honestly surprised my former employer didn't let the client take that one to court as he's taken folks to court for less. But I really do know the why, when it got to the level that the customer was dragging his name in front of the county commission he did what he felt he needed to silence the fool. It's all about appearances to him.

Pesky, most of our bluffs are so wooded that you can't even see much of the beaches. Those of my customers that live actually down by the water have so many tracks that it's hard to figure out sometimes. If someone does see a fox, it usually turns into a grizzly bear by the time they tell the story three times. I know my son and one of our techs caught their first foxes in cages right along the beach just north of here.

Did the tech. in question go ahead with the yard-trapping? If so, he's an idiot. We are fortunate in Mo. to have language in the nuisance trapping law that stipulates only an animal that "beyond reasonable doubt is causing damage" can be trapped as a nuisance animal. Other than that, it's trapping out of season.
I have to constantly explain to callers that the fox running thru their back yard or the squirrel at the bird feeder is not causing damage.
Nothing wrong with selling $2K in exclusion, if it helped keep the varmints out. What bugs me is the overselling of such.

Dave I assume that he did as he would be severely reprimanded for "leaving money on the table" which is THE cardinal sin for that outfit.

Winkelmann's Law: The variety of species taken and the total of those species, can only be regulated by the balance of the homeowner's checkbook.

When you have a great law, don't mess with it. ( I have seven grandchildren that want to go to Sarah Lawrence College, $57,556 )
