How many of you will be targeting raccoon this fall/winter with prices said to be very low?

Population has to be kept in check Yes, but suppose you didn't even have a market. How many traps would you run for how long before you stop losing money? Would you run a line, say, like an Iowa long liner, set out enough traps to catch 1000 'coon without a market? That sounds good but most wouldn't have that kind of money to throw away in the dead of winter. js

How many of you will be targeting raccoon this fall/winter with prices said to be very low? I'll be targeting them since they are the most plentiful furbearer in my area and are fairly easy to catch. My son goes with me a lot and it helps keep the excitement up for him when we are catching critters. I'll also have sets for other animals, but we'll target coons mainly. I'm not a longliner who catches 1000 coon a year and don't rely on the fur check to pay my bills so the down market really isn't that big of a deal to me.

I've never seen so many raccoon killed on the roads as I have in the last few days. Most of these fairly large raccoon too. They are picking corn and combining soybeans here , so the raccoon are on the move.

Anyone sold 'coon pelts this season ? Just wondered how serious I should or shouldn't pursue them.

Friend of mine is a fur buyer and was told by his buyer not to buy any coon. A few days later a guy brought in 30 early coon and wanted to sell them. Friend told him to take them home with him. Guy was all upset. Friend told him "Hey, I told you and every body else told you not to trap them this year", especially early coon. They are worthless and blue at that. Guy said but you are a fur buyer.... Yes, maybe so but if I can't even sell them why would I buy them? Even every magazine and any other articles about trapping told you not to trap coon this year because of the excess up in Canada. Did you think we were joking or lying? Guy just stormed out, I would guess looking for a sucker for those blue boys. And he was only paying about $1.75-$2.00 for rats and gave someone $3.00 for a mink. But hey, I don't sell my fur to him anyhow. I was just surprised how low the mink and rats went for. Anyhow back on subject, if you didn't target coon aggressively you did the right thing. I myself have put it off for three years and just want to nail a few big boys as I mink and rat trap on the river. Need to get back into the swing of coon trapping. Doing experiments with DP traps this year. So far my glow in the dark painted ones are winning. But will see how the season totals end up.
