I use it 3 rat lures and 1 beaver lure. I just put the container in a pan of water and boil it till it a liquid and add my scents to the vaseline.

pros: inexpensive, easy to mix and store, as long as it stays cool.

con: when it gets warm it gets runny and gets every where, forgot a jar in my truck bed this summer in 100 degree weather you could smell the beaver castor for 100 yrds.lol

I was wondering about that--I heard it works. If I can detect an odor to it, I thought any critter could.

I use for rat lures......melt it in a pan and put mint in it. Works pretty well.

Also used as told by a lure maker with his liguid coon lure. Made dbl. the amount and worked real well. Makes it somewhat water/rain proof if cool enough.

is there an ingrediant that can be picked up from local grocery stores to make lures freeze proof? I am going to try my luck at makeing a few, but would like the scent to contiue to disipate after cold weather hits.

I use it for beaver lure. You can definitely smell it...the beaver don't seem to care. I heat it in a pan and stir the ingrediants in.

MO-trapper go to the spice section and pick up some anise oil, banana oil, imitation vanilla. I use 1 oz in a 12 to 16 oz container of vaseline. you have three lure recipes right there.

I have also used it as a base for a skunky marten lure. I like the consistency and it holds up real well. it does tend to seal the lure in with time, but you can just resmear it and it opens the surface back up.

Nova Scotia,
I mix it with dried, ground castors and that all I use for beaver. I had one batch that lasted me nearly 5 years and it never "locked" any of the smell in.

When you go to buy it, look closely at the labeling on the jars. They sell both the scented and unscented types if you're worried about an extra smell.

Ive tried it but beaver clearly prefered the glycerin based lures in my tests. It will work though, just didnt work as well for me. If you like that consistancy in your cat and canine lures use lanolin for a base.

Do any of you guys have a suggestion for an oil base that doesn't have a scent to it. I've tried the vaseline, but I want something that is more liquid for my rat lures.

Thanks,
Waz

You don't say where your are at. If its up north then ........... Stir in lots of skunk, and go for the Marten & Fisher.
Its one of, if not the best cold weather lure going for both critters.

I use it.castor and vaseline for beaver and with different glands for different critters.Marten ,wolverine ermine-make sure you label them.Course cant mix the smell between a ermine or mink!
Also mix it with pine ,spruce and fir pitch for a cover scent when hunting. Do not know if it works or not Smells good to me smeared on my hat or boots, works too for your hands makes them feel good and cures cracks and such.My kind of girl likes the smell too

I don't know if it has any detectable scent but i've heard Johnny Thorpe recommends peanut oil as a lure base. Ace

As far as "locking in the scent", or "sealing in the lure"...I too have noticed it to a degree.

Using vaseline the resultant lure does not seem as strong, and it does seem to glaze over after a couple days...more so than glycol anyway. It can be refreshed by just giving it a smear.

I only use my vaseline lure when I expect a hard rain....my preference for castor lures is glycol.

Compromise can be obtained by adding a little glycol to the vaseline base and mixing over heat.

I've been thinking about trying Crisco.

Asa, would mineral oil work for you? It has no odor.

Mineral oil will work with some ingredients but has a tendancy nullify odors with others. That is why few use it in lure making. One will work up a good smelling formula with mineral oil, let it sit a while and sometimes no odor of this or that left at all. Ace
