Pits are bred to latch and hang on. Is it true or an urban legend that they will release if you shove something up their butt hole?

LOL, check with Snopes! It would work on me, but with the PB, It would likely let go, then spin around and latch on you!!!!!

I have been a longtime owner of bully breeds, all have been great dogs. The lock jaw is a myth, the latch and hold is 100% true..and the bigger the muscles in the head, neck, shoulder area the longer and harder they will hold. As far as plugging them, I would only attempt that if it were my animal and I was confident it wouldn't turn on me. 50/50 gamble if the animal is in the red. A breaking stick is a wiser choice. A flat very hard piece of wood, like a survey stick but thinner between the jaws and twist.
I had a big ole boy that would bite onto a ball hanging from a rope in a tree and just swing himself. His head was about the size of a basket ball. His name was rosco pico.

Thanks, your information may help someone in a difficult situation. The breaking stick only works if you have a breaking stick and know what to do. But a mother whose kid is latched will welcome the dog turn on her. But only if she knoes to plug it.

As much as I love these breeds I will admit they can be dangerous.

I used to raise them in Florida to hunt hogs with, and we always made it a point to have a break stick close by. With multiple dogs in the house and kennels, we would have those hanging at different spots around the house, and they came in very handy more than once. I took a Hickory hammer handle and whittled it down to a wedge, that would fit between the dogs jaws to pop them open if needed. I had never heard of the method you are suggesting, and it might work, but suspect it wouldn't make the dog real happy and might create a second person being bitten....I have to admit it did work fairly well on one of my dogs, somehow on the airboat one morning he got inside the cage that protects the prop. and got hit. Not only did it take what was left of his tail off, but removed the majority of his rectum with it. After a week at the vet getting rebuilt, he didn't bite anything for quite a while.

If the holding dog has nads, grab ahold of them, and give them a good squeeze.

If it has a collar on, get ahold of it from behind, with both hands, and choke the dog out with it.

Urban legend has people ready to shoot every pit, look at what kind of owners they have in the cities, living with that would make me nasty to.

Trapdye, your comment is very true. Only dog we had that was ever just mean was a jack Russell. All my bullies have been babies, even one that was afraid of the dark.
Albert, I have always wanted to train for hog hunting! But no real hogging here in oregon.

Thanks for the advice No.4, My pitt only tangled twice with dogs, she didn't start it but tried to finish it. Took 30 secs to get her to let go even though she had won. Hopefully I won't have to use those tricks in the future. Some dogs just don't like to play with Pitts.

In 10 years working with cops we had 6 pit situations. One involved a pitt that got loose and was protecting a neighbors dogs in their pen. Another loose pitt was guarding an apartment building door and wouldn't let anyone in or out. We didn't shoot either one. I am guessing pitts have a guarding instinct.

Our pit guards as well just babies.. we have to lock him up when babies come over due to he will not let anyone touch them.. when we had our kid my mom came over an nu snipped and bit not locked on her hand because she went to pick cam up.. just enough to get someone attention. . As far as sticking something up his butt I would pass on that im sure it would get them to let go but I be afraid it would lock on to me, they were bred to lock on grabbing bulls by the noses to bring them down ive also seen catahulas do yhe same its kinda neat to watch also gives all new respect to the dogs..

A friend of mine had the sweetest well-behaved pit bull that helped a 9 month old toddler down the the stairs by holding on to the kid's onesy in its front teeth. The dog had previously witnessed the mom yelling at the kid for climbing the stairs, and figured that it would help out.

I have 4 pits. As they pass, they will be replaced with other pits. All have been raised with baby humans. While they get nervous when "others" pick up a baby human, they know, and start whining, they have NEVER showed a single sign of aggression. These dogs range from 8-14 years old, now. They raised these children from birth, basically.

This is the same knee jerk reaction people have towards Firearms, and Trapping. Some kind of Neg incident and they want to stop all trapping, shoot all Pit's, and ban all firearms, irregardless of the facts!

The only pits I've seen with "bad behavior" or "aggressive tendencies" were raised by people who wanted them to be that way.

I grew up on a farm where my grandparents ran a boarding kennel they launched in the late 60's after military retirement. I saw
every breed under the sun from the time I was born until way into my 20's when I moved from my hometown.

I've never seen a breed that is purely sweet if the owner is the opposite, any individual dog can be made into something you won't
want your fingers or body parts near if you treat it poorly, just like people, you can raise good ones or bad ones but you are the factor
that controls are large part of the outcome (yes genetics and line can add traits but you are the primary imho).

Do I get a knee jerk reaction to certain breeds based on some bad experiences, yup sure do, but they generally again accompanied
bad people...

Only dog that ever actually bit me in dealing with thousands a year through the boarding and those my family owned was a "scotty"
that my cousins owned, dog was taunted and played with rough from the time he was a puppy, the other litter mates were with some
family as well and were as sweet as can be, not "bear" little bugger would do anything to get a piece of flesh from you!

I think Pits are having a turn in their future with so many shows, groups and others pushing what they are and what they aren't. I have
good friends that are quiet hippy tree huggers who have adopted pits from shelters and they are amazing dogs!

The other aspect we all know is that while some dogs (breed or individual) will tolerate just about anything a kid or child does, letting a dog
stare at or harass a dog is a sure way to get any of them to turn into biters!

Anyway, interesting off topic here, truly love dogs haven't been without one in my home till we lost the last two we had. Frankly would rather
spend time with dogs then most people! smile

Pits and other so called "aggressive" breeds need the rehabilitation of their image in society. It has been earned through the actions of people,
not the breeds themselves.

Thanks for your input. I am not a pitt hater just asked a question. Might not be a simple question but asked in the mind frame of having honest answers.

Put me down as a fanatical pit bull hater. The drug dealers favorite dog. Cost 4 grand for shots for my son who was bit for no reason other than being on a public road. Only consolation is the cops gunned them both down 3 days later.

Not a pit hater. I have owned one. The last three dogs I have seen had to be put down were pits though, and one more today that will probably be soon chasing other dogs and people growling.

As for the finger trick. I tried it when the wife bit me and it seemed to work blush whistle crazy

Well, there always seems to be one in every crowd. By the way, how old was your son?
Young child, I doubt. If so, where were you? Just asking.

My son was 30 something. So why do you think there is one in every crowd? It wouldn't have to do with the way people breed and train these moron dogs, would it? I don't have a problem with Dobermans or Rottweilers.

Well, Paul, I have four, currently, and between the nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and my own children, I have probably had, including puppies, in the neighborhood of 50 pit bulls, and 8 children. All from birth to adulthood. These dogs have been males and females of various temperament, just like any other breed. I'm sure you have spent time around dogs.
I will grant you that Pits can indeed be destructive. So can many other breeds.
I will say, though, that they are like clay. As in you can make them into anything you want. (far more malleable than most breeds!).
My father raises collies, and he told me as a child that a dog will be a direct reflection on it's owner.
Truer words were never spoken.
The only time my Bull Dogs get excited is when someone un-known shows up at the house and picks up one of the small children. They whine, and circle the stranger until the kids are placed back on the floor. Never a violent move, just worried.
30 years, and going.

The inherent problem with pit bulls is their loyalty to obey. They can be trained to do whatever one wants, including attacking other dogs or people. They can also be trained to be the best behaved dog you will ever see. The other problem with them is that their jaws, teeth, and methods are very efficient at causing serious damage.

I'm not a pit bull hater either. I've always had at least one if not 2. But I learned the vinegar trick while I was raising goats and had a pit that kept grabbing goats by the nose. She wasn't trying to hurt them, just kept holding them by the nose. Vinegar sprayed on the nose makes them release

How are they if given work ? Kept busy ? Lots of terriers seem to become unruly if not given a job.

Though they are referred to as "terriers", they do not have that type of personality/behavior.
