Getting some pressure to get a pup for the wife and kids. Looking for an outdoor dog- 99.9% of the time anyway. Jeff
Why even get a dog if your going to keep him outside 99% of the time?
Eh...wot?

I had a husky. Kills every cat they can get ahold of. When they get after something there aint no stopping them. Very loving loyal dogs otherwise.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

I'd suggest a golden retriever. We have two and they're great dogs, good with kids and very easily trained. The malamute we used to have killed cats, chickens, and growled at everyone but the delivery guys. (They had dog treats.) We'd got him as an adult, so if you're getting a malamute, be careful about what you get. Our older golden retriever will bark when there's something going on, like guests, which we like. They'll both bark at varmints too. They're both wonderful dogs, and since they're mostly outdoor, they don't need us to exercise them, though the female can get a bit hyper. (I'm suspicious she was bred from some sort of bird dog line since she can go all day. It's too bad we don't bird hunt because she's be a great bird dog with a bit of training.) Neither golden retriever brothers chickens, and they've never hurt a cat. They're somewhat good about keeping varmints out of the yard too. They are primarily outdoor dogs, but we let them in the garage at night if the temperature's going to be bellow 10 or so since the older one's ten. (I'm sure they'd be fine in the dog house if we didn't let them in.) The nice thing about our two dogs is they get along well, so no dog fights or growling.

Nothing better than a golden retriever or Chessie - they're great dogs.
I have one of each right now, and they'll do whatever you need. They're great duck, goose and grouse dogs, but also (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) fine watch dogs. And tough enough to handle the cold weather - they stay outside unless it's a really cold -20 degree night. Goldens do have more fur, so they can pretty much take any cold. And other than in the springtime they don't really shed much - buy a good brush for when they're shedding and you're good.
I like having a dog that will make some noise when someone comes in the driveway, but I don't want a dog that's going to take a bite out of the UPS man either. If you're looking for a real protective dog, then neither of these breeds are what you're looking for. Noise is good, but blood isn't.
And we have barn cats that they don't even pay attention to, and chickens that roam all over, and they NEVER even look at them. I don't want a cat-killing or chicken-killing dog.
But if you ever do buy a Chessie, remember, they're not nearly as easy to train as a golden. Goldens want nothing more than to please you, so you can train them to do most anything. Chessies have a different way of thinking, and they're smart as (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman). But once you convince a Chessie that you're right (and that can be a hard thing to do!) they're fantastic dogs.
And if you're a duck hunter, like I am, Chessie's are the best. Last year in Canada my little Chessie was the last dog standing after a week, (two labs wouldn't go anymore) and the last hunt she retrieved a 4-man limit of 32 greenheads in freezing water over a 4 hour period - and would have probably done another 30. They just don't quit. Tough as (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman).
Also, both breeds are fantastic with kids - I can't stress that enough. They're part of the family.
ANY hound, huskies and malamutes will all run - I like a dog that stays in the farmyard, and isn't running deer all over the woods. Or getting hit by a car on the road....

Our malamute was lazy an didn't run. He normally killed slow chickens. My grandfather's hound who was two miles away came up here and killed our chickens though. She chased and killed pretty much anything she could catch. I agree about goldens not running. It's really nice being able to set my traps less than a mile from the house and not worry about the dogs getting into them.

I’d definitely opt with a border collie. Bought one when I was in high school and raised it for working cows. It never once ran away. I’ve got 7 siblings and never had an issue with it. My buddy also has a Belgian Malinois which is used for sniffing out IEDs and drugs but never has an issue with family members. Basically both dog breeds are extremely intelligent, great for outside, and good family protectors.
