You might try a feed store/grain elevator store. They often sell urea granules. This is used instead of road salt and is used by airports to de-ice runways

I found some at the local concrete yard. They carry it in small pellets and it's super cheap.

Is the calcium chloride corrosive? Just wondered what it does to a trap.

Very corrosive! Your gonna want to use a waxed trap to start and a pressure washer as soon as you pull those traps.

Calcium chloride is corrosive, I used it 40yrs ago in flake form, easy to find then. Beginning of this season I used just non-iodized salt from Walmart, 1lb containers. When it went to single digits and below I bought a -15° melter in a bag at the local farm store. Has a combination of sodium chloride(NaCl), calcium chloride(CaCl), magnesium chloride(MgCl), and one other, might have been the rust inhibitor. The thing I don't like is that is looks more like rock salt size wise. I would mix it as needed in a separate clean bucket along with the regular salt with my dry sand/dirt mixture or just dry sand if the trap was in sand. Last two coyotes caught it was -15 to -20F. One was on a sand mound from badger digging where I had previously caught a yote. The other was in an open timber area with dirt ground, no sand.
Anybody have an idea of how to grind/pulverize this rock salt looking size stuff into something smaller? Wheat mill type grinder/ hammer mill type? Any ideas? I am going to do some waxed sand and dirt for 2018 season, but the above mixture proved itself.

It really does not need to be ground up fine like salt to work , just put a big double handful down in the bottom of a deep trap bed. Then cover with dirt place your trap cover lightly with dirt another thin layer of cc then a little more dirt. Don’t forget to pressure wash your traps as soon as you pull them !

Just put it in a blender. That's what I do with my calcium chloride.

I was wondering about the cheaper alternatives worth magnesium in them. Wither it would have the same corrosion effects on the trap, but I ha e been using the cloride pretty steady for 2 months and I don't see any issues with it yet. And e ery one of my sets work no matter the freezing.
Here most of the time when it's cold the wind is what really gets the dirt to just ice over like hard candy. But every dirt hole I have out still operates like it's summer.

Ken you won’t notice the corrosion until next summer when you start going through your gear. Take everything to the car wash after season , put your traps in an old milk crate ( an old wire one works the best ) this helps from chasing traps around on the concrete!
