We don't get this kind of cold often in Alabama but after setting a trap in frozen ground....my hats off to you guys up north! I never even thought about what it would be like setting traps in frozen ground until my brick hammer bounced back when I hit the ground! I also usually use a drill to make dirt holes....that was a whole new experience as well! You folks deal with things we down south probably never even think about!

It puts a spin on the term "pounding in steel" for sure. My ax is my best friend right now. LLL

Yep, been using my fire axe a lot this week. Our frost is about 6" deep now and with lows of 12, 10 and 8 the next 3 days and highs around 30, it is not gonna get better anytime soon.

Our ground has been frozen for over a week now . Now were getting a blizzard on top of that . Im stuck here at work sense 9 lastnight. Dont know when ill get off. I m supposed to be off tomarrow for the last 3 days of rifle season . Guess ill see what happens.

I would be thinking with the lack of snow cover our frost is pushing towards 6 FEET deep, depending on the soil.

Well, its not often we deal with these temps! I kicked an anthill and about broke a toe the other day! It just opened my eyes to what others commonly deal with and humbled me a little! Im just praying it doesn't come down to me having to break ice to crappie fish in a few days! Lol

ice fishing crappies is about one of my favorite things in the world and if ya can believe it they are better eating through the ice.

I'm up around Decatur for a week, did I bring dry dirt? Naw, don't need it here. Guess I better find a couple of ant hills to desecrate. Look at the bright side, we get to learn about under ice beaver trapping.

Same thing I was thinking when it was -32 about the cousins North of the border~

And imagine now if your soil was actually frozen from late October, up to late April...

Been trapping over 46 years and if there one thing I learn over the years is I learn when it a mess outside like this is to stay in the house till it over. Never had a hankering to make dirt holes in snow, chop ice for a hatter beaver, to volunteer for the flu, bust my a$$ on some frozen pond or write my name in the snow. Days like this is for sitting in the house drinking hot coffee and watching the news on people up north in 100 car pile ups (you know the one who say us southern folks don't know how to drive in snow) or just watching the dog lick his self. And give my RESPECT to the guys who make good home heating units.

Its warm here now a whole 18 and snowing. Tonight's wind chill looks to be -16 below.

Those pile ups are caused by southerners venturing too far north and messing it up for everyone else.

Spudded out about 100 rat traps yesterday. Ice was 8 inches thick on most. Lots of froze in traps and critters, even put the spud through a few. I think I'm over working this hard for 4 dollar rats...

LOL, Now Tweed you know your telling a big one. A true southerner would freeze to death just as soon as he cross the TN. line. You know the movie Jeremiah Johnson and that part where he found Hatchet Jack. That was a real guy from south MS. who open his refrigerator to fast.

I just pulled everything. It's not worth the time and trouble. I've been chopping ice all morning it's 6" thick right now. Pulled all my beaver sets. Yup, and I missed one last night, the darn safety on the 330 fell back on the spring. I hate when that happens. Beaver are hungry though, they chewed every stick in the set. I'm going to wait a few days and see what the weather looks like.

I'll just set by the fire. It will warm up soon. The animals will still be there.
