I agree this would make an excellent set but unless you used a drag chances are the hut would be destroyed and that is a big no-no here. Just today checked out a large hut that the coyotes had dug out. Don't know if they got anything out of it but the hut was empty and frozen solid. Would love to make a set on top like you suggested but no easy way to anchor the trap and the area is void of trees and brush so a bit reluctant to use a drag.

Maybe drill down and freeze the chain into the ice?

Yes but put a disposable on the end of it

Depending on how thick the ice is, I'll drill down through it then pound in the disposable stake. I'll use a bit about the same size as the stake is wide so it slides down without any issues. Once it pops out the bottom it'll turn sideways anyways which prevents it from being pulled back up again. Now that we got a little more snow I'l going to try something a little crazy. I build just a 12" by 12" 2X4 square that I'm going to lay flat on the ice and fill with waxed dirt, then bed my trap in there and lightly cover with snow. We had a little warmer weather for a couple of days that turned the top layer of snow to slush so I had to pull my traps out of the ice. Had tracks walking right over the pan too... figures lol.

Now we gained about 4 more inches of snow, and have 2-4 more coming today, so I figured I'd try someone totally different figuring what's the worst that can happen. I'll let you know how well that pans out.
