Has anyone use them to catch mink?I was thinking of making some for next year. Is the box open on both end's?

I put a rugged wire mesh on one end .....and the other end I cover with a piece of plywood and cut a 2 1/2 inch hole in it.....Mink and weasels love holes...

Bulky, ineffective and not worth the trouble in my opinion. Leaning how to use the minks natural environment to make good effective sets is what I prefer. That is my opinion and others will have their own. If it works for you then go crazy with it.....

Wish I had more time to trap....

I agree with strike. Made two in the past and had a very low catch rate compared to bling and pocket sets. Actually I think I had better luck with catching un targeted mink.

Never heard him discussed much on here but sam wood has good arguments for using boxes. I have only gotten lucky in catching mink in my muskrat sets. So my opinion is not the best.

I would never say they don't work, I just choose not to use them. It is like all trapping, some things work great for some and not so great for others. I feel I have better luck setting bottom edge as opposed to boxes.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Mink Box Trapping: When using baited box cubbies the key to reasonable success IMO is to consider all the following when setting them:

---Whether using footholds or body grip traps, the main things to remember about the boxes are to set on location where mink travel, have the back of the box screened for air movement, camouflage the box well with surrounding vegetation/snow or whatever and hide the bait with dry grass so the mink will enter the box searching for it and keep the bait fresh.

---The best location for boxes is at beaver pond outlets, overhanging banks, small stream entrances with larger water courses and alongside open water areas of frozen streams.

---Use a box entrance cover with a 2 ½ inch hole. Mink explore holes all the time and thus it's my opinion, and experience, that the hole is an attraction to them. Another advantage of the restrictive entrance hole is that when trapping farm areas it restricts barn cats from entering.

---Use a pan trigger set up. Although mink are accustomed to tunneling through vegetation, it is my understanding and experience that, many will often balk at the cold, hard and stiff wires in their face at the box entrance and shy away from entering. Whereas with a pan trigger trap set close to the bait at back of the box, and nothing in their face, they will proceed to enter and investigate further thus stepping on the pan and getting caught.
